After seven years and £250m, Santander have decided to end their sponsorship of Ferrari's F1 team.

I suspect they may become McLaren's title sponsor.

Maybe they don't see F1 as a serious sponsorship vehicle the way they used to.

Maybe they're just skint.

Maybe they’re sick of the poor performance and also see F1 for what it is nowadays, a waste of time!

I wonder if Ferrari had won the WDC with Vettel they would have stayed?

Advertising has changed a lot and trying to attract other sources to F1 will be very difficult when the fan base continues to drop.

i am sure they will find a new title sponsor but at what price. News big money sponsors now seem to mostly involve some form of gambling. However a bit like smoking Gambling is not welcome in some places F! goes.

It explains why Ferrari want to get rid of the fins. No embarrassing empty advertising space when Santander pull out!

Did Santander sign the deal when Alonso was there? Was it part of some patriotic backing of 'their' guy? Not sure.

Hardly surprising, big names seem to me moving away from more traditional forms of marketing.

Do you not value you’re time then?

As noted, they may shift 100% to McLaren. Would fit - Alonso, probably a good value deal given Zak’s knowledge.

I hope it is true, would give McLaren some much needed stability and boost going into 2018.

My reading of quotes by Christian Horner on page 23 of the Brazil GP thread suggest it was Ferrari. Now I'm confused.

I do value my time, which is why I don’t watch it. I’m guessing Santander realise the numbers are falling and deem the returns not good enough.

I guess we need to see if they land their euros elsewhere in F1 before making that call?

They already have a title sponsor - Philip Morris / Marlboro, although god knows what PM get out of it anymore

Santander will easily be replaced and even if they weren’t, Ferrari aren’t exactly short on cash....

I doubt they will pull out entirely. They see F1 as a nice earner. They just won't be the main one.

In countries where smoking is still socially acceptable (or rather; tolerated), the Marlboro / Ferrari brand is used in point of sale and other advertising quite extensively.

Philip Morris are also investing heavily in vaping and alternative nicotine delivery technologies. These exist in a rather muddled market at the moment but at some point, I suspect that the market will become better regulated and distribution channels better defined; moving away from the low-rent vape shops and shopping mall market stall type outlets. When this happens, I suspect that vape brands will start to appear on the side of F1 cars...assuming the EU regulations do not restrict it in the same way cigarette brands are.
