I've read a thread a while ago containing loads of wise and wonderful advice for learners

I can't find it, does anyone know where it is or would like to contribute to a new one ?

I'll start with :

1. Treat all drivers like they are trying to kill you !!

2. Get the back end out at every opportunity

3. Aim for pedestrians. You get 10 points for normal people, 50 points for chavs.

4. The speed shown in those red circles is the minimum speed for the road

In seriousness, finesse is everything. If you can make your inputs - steering, clutch, throttle, braking and gearchanges - smooth, precise, mechanically considerate and well-timed, everything else just falls into place. Treat every single thing you do with the controls as a little test to see how well you can achieve what you're trying to do, and you'll quickly become a very good driver.

Just assuming "that's the brake, I'll press it when I want to stop" is enough won't get you far. It's an art, all of it!

A person's indicator only shows that their bulb is working.

Drive country roads like you expect to meet yourself coming the other way.

Don't drive around with the heater all the way up - it's cozy but it RUINS your concentration completely.

You will start with a st car but that doesn't mean you can put some 22's on it and a big exhaust. In fact there's a law against it so don't bother!
Also caps are banned unless in a convertible in winter.
Watch out for white vans, pov spec BMW's and VAG's.
Don't buy 'P' plates they just mean that you shouldn't really have passed and people will take advantage.

It's something most adults will spend a considerable amount of their lives doing, learn to both enjoy and excel at it smile

Unfortunately a lot of drivers seem to see it purely as a means of getting from a to b with no thought of the action and consequences that can ensue.
