The official "I just bought a volkswagen bora" thread
Discussion
... by "just bought" I really meant "picked it up on Monday".
Having two sports cars wasn't working out very practical, having to look after nieces during the week so needed something more practical.
Paid £600 -£700 if you include buying tax- for it from a dealer who wanted it gone quick (was a trade-in); full Volkswagen service history, low (ish) mileage, 4x branded tyres with good tread, Mot'd until November, everything works as it should.
It's a 1999 2.0 petrol (8v, single overhead cam) in jazz blue. I actually had to check that it was indeed petrol before filling it up; "they're all like that sir". Averaging 42mpg from the obc.
Not bad for what I paid for it, hopefully reliable enough. More money to chuck at the TVR.

Why official?
He's being ironic, as with the bit about full VW service history on a 14 year old shed. But even though he's paid over the odds for it, it will probably soldier on for a while yet.
Find another for T&T'd with FSH for £700?

For the money you can't really go wrong with that, good price especially with tax included. Should be easy enough to sell on for similar money when you're finished with it
Cars are a little more expensive in scotland, It's a good solid car with no problems. I was looking at golfs around £1600 and they all had problems! Saved myself a good bit of cash by getting it over a similar aged golf.SV8Predator said:

Service history shows that it wasn't owned by a penny pincher, and it makes it easier to punt it on to the next buyer 6-12 months later.Meths said:

I had a Golf with that engine. Never saw 42mpg though. At least it's pretty bulletproof. zeduffman said:

I do mostly steady motorway and dual carriageway. I also suspect the obc is optimistic. I brimmed it today so time will tell. After a motorway run from uni using my lightest foot (boring):
Mpg falls off a cliff when I go over 65 mph

You have done the right thing, I sold one a year and a bit ago of the exact same spec, the reg doesnt end in JKM does it ?
Anyway, I too it in PX off a mate as he was buying my car, car was mint, had 90 ish K, the usual knackered windows and I sold it for £640, £40 more than I bought it for, having spent a day minting it, the annoying thing is the diesel version, same year was 2 to 3 times more expensive and usally had 160 plus thousand on, wonder how much fuel that price difference buys ?
I think the 130 diesel drives a little nicer but the 2.0 petrol isnt a bad unit, grunty enough and 30 plus MPG so not that tragic, the diesels do nearer 50 but are getting old and getting a bit unrelaible.

Agreed. I really don't understand this ridiculous obsession with diesels on the used market, seems to particularly manifest itself with VWs and BMWs. They don't deserve to be worth so much more given the mileage is generally significantly higher.Anyway, I too it in PX off a mate as he was buying my car, car was mint, had 90 ish K, the usual knackered windows and I sold it for £640, £40 more than I bought it for, having spent a day minting it, the annoying thing is the diesel version, same year was 2 to 3 times more expensive and usally had 160 plus thousand on, wonder how much fuel that price difference buys ?

Impressed the OP achieved 45mpg, very respectable figure

I found out the hrad way that diesels are a false economy (to the tune of £2300). fking peice of st audi went kaboom moments out of warranty.
For once with a cheap car, I don't have a "to-do" list. Everything works as it should. Well pleased with it in that respect.
Contradicting my hatred for modified cars, I think it would look nice when lowered and with bigger wheels. The front splitter scrapes kerbs as standard though!

Same engine in my wife's Octavia, and it's easy to get low-mid 40's mpg on a long run if you aren't in a big hurry. It seems to be widely regarded as a crap engine due to it's rather low specific output by modern standards, but it has a wide spread of torque that makes it a very relaxing drive. Does like a drop of oil though.
Only found out the other day that you can get a Mk1 Fabia with this engine in it, there are very few of them around though.
