Not the 4.2 the 4.0

I have been to look at one
I loved it.

Plus - V8/Jag/Sir/Cheap to buy
Minus - It'll only do some miles to the gallon (but so does my subaru)/gear box can be hit and miss

For an extra £1000-2000 I could get the diesel. Worth it?
Or for a similar price to the V8 I can get the V6. How is this?

4.2 is out of the question though.

If you can stretch to the diesel, why is the 4.2 out of the question?

The 4.2 is a peach.

If the your fuel consumption is going to be about the same, and you manage now, I dont see it's worth the risk of going with a nice modern incredibly complicated diesel engine over a simpler easier to maintain petrol.

Lets face it you arnt swapping to a Jag to save money are you?

(my man maths can quite easily see me swapping my golf for a S-type 3.0, and it's not so much of a stretch to a 4.0, but I would do my own servicing and I have a friend with all the JLR diagnostics kit)

Insurance is a cripple on the 4.2.

Is this the one with the plastic belt tensioners and Nikasil liners? Good engine but make sure it has had the tensioners replaced with the later version, and it's not putting out any smoke.

I would like to save money (who wouldn't) so that is why I asked about the diesel and V6. In an ideal world I would like the V8 with the diesel MPG (this is never going to happen on the Jag)
Just curious as to how they are but the V8 I went and looked at was rather special.

Not too sure about the liners but yes I believe that is the one.

I'd be looking at a £3k 3.0 if it was my money. You might even find one with a manual box which leaves less to go wrong.

Next door to me has a diesel XF (same engine) routine service was £600, a collegue has an S-type Diesel, it's sitting in the garage, written off due to a dodgy injector seal he left too long... (cam belt at 105k btw) I know it's a small snapshot and the majority would be 100% fine but I just know I'd get a dodgy one.

The 5 speed box in the 4.0 isn't great and has lots of reliabiilty and longevity issues. Plus tensioner problems with the engine itself. 4.2 with the 6 speed box or V6 petrol manual for me I'm afraid.

I'd be inclined to go for a 3.0 Manual, the early ones seem to be rather quick on paper...

Really?? I'm paying £406 a year on my R. Cheapest quote was £340ish but that was without certain add-ons.

I had a 3.0 manual. Good car and very underrated and IMO ideal as a base for a sleeper or kit car as the engine loves to rev and works well with the manual box.

BUT If I was going to buy again for a road car I'd go for a V8 and probably a supercharged one at that. The manual box is reasonable enough but the fuel consumption isn't much different as its still a heavy car and even the V6 engine is only using a small percentage of its potential in normal daily duties. The 3.0 manual is quick because it has 240bhp and quite a short ratio gearbox - 65mph in 2nd so saves a gearchange at the traffic light grand prix. The downside is that it doesn't do much better if any than the auto in terms of mpg at a cruise - best I could get was 38mpg and a cruise at 70-80 sees about 30-32mpg - according to other owners on the Jag forums the 4.0 V8 can do that. I would get about 22mpg round town even when used enthusiastically.

Sounds ok to me for a big 3 litre petrol.

Just because V8 owners reckon they get that doesn't mean they do.

^^ what he said.. I had the Auto but MPG was about the same, manual for performance and auto for wafting. I my view jags are for wafting,Mine was great and the V8 would be even better.
My only criticism with the car overall is for a big car the rear seats are rather uncomfortable for long journeys

Thankfully I drive in the drivers seats biggrin
I have to agree re: wafting. If I was after something 'sporty' I'd keep the Subaru.
