Need a very cheap runabout for city driving and the odd 100mile trip in a blue moon.

5 doors, cheap as chips to run and maintain is key. Brother in law who is a mechanic swears by the Aygo...

Is the 1.0 a dangerously slow car? How is it on the motorway...im more concerned with sound and crosswinds?

50mpg+ and cheap tax makes it a very tempting proposition.

My girlfriend has an Aygo. For what they are, great little cars. They're reasonable on a motorway. I expected wind noise, 3 cylinder engine wheezing and struggling but it's pleasantly surprising. Lack of rev counter and stereo helps though! We took ours on a road trip from Yorkshire around Scotland in March as my car was temporarily off the road (disappointed is not the word!). But, it was good fun hustling up the A82 in it and it coped well with slush and snow as we descended the A9. MPG is great and you can't really argue against £20 road tax a year.
We chose the Aygo as it's the more aesthetically pleasing variant of the 107, C1 & Aygo brotherhood. The former two stuck with black plastic bumper mouldings for christs sake! Ask away if there's anything I can help you with.

We've got an Aygo. Five door 'Sport' version.

It's a little underpowered but it really does cost peanuts to run and service. It's clearly built to a budget, but it's a sassy looking little thing, very well equipped and utterly reliable.

Can't fault it really.

We had n Aygo for a couple of years,

They are as stated before very cheap to Run and can be fun to drive if you work the 3 cylinder engine.

Ok on the motorway will keep up with 3rd lane traffic, will be noisy .

The fiesta will be a lot more refined and better on a longer run, also much more choice of engine, spec and colours.

I would go for the fiesta which has a very good reputation from what I hear.

A friend of mine has a C1 which is the same car as the Aygo and Peugeot 107 and its a reliable little motor the C1 is the cheapest of the bunch and comes with a rev counter in VTR trim and I saw a 5 door VTR in a local dealer with low mileage the other week for £3200 so can be picked up ok in budget.

The car is great on the motorway and we were buzzing along in the 80s and 90s no problem.

The only problem with the C1 over the other two is when buying you will have to like red as it seems to be the colour of 80% of C1's on the road.

Fiesta every time. Aygo/C1/107 I am told (by a serial owner of all the variants) is fun on B-roads and round town and utterly terrifying on any dual carriageway. The Fiesta is just as chuckable and a lot more composed at high speed.

I regularly see Aygos/C1/107s doing 85+ on motorways, I suspect it won't be a particularly silent experience though. In fact they make pretty reasonable power for a normally aspirated 1.0L car engine (68bhp).

I'd go with the aygo (or c1/ 107) as you wouldn't get a particularly good fiesta for that money

I hired a 107 on holiday a couple of years back and when I came back decided I wanted one as a run around, bought an Aygo Black, it was OK, but once out of holiday mode soon got bored of it, tinny, bit noisy and gutless for anything around town, and my other car was a Merc E350cdi so on the dual it was anything but planted, it was a real chore. Suspension was fine round town but too soft for going fast, hit a small ripple and you all bounce up and down!

My daughter has a T plate fiesta, rounded shape one, and that is head and shoulders above the Aygo in every regard imho, so a new one can only be better.

I will say this though, The Aygo was £10400 new with £500 dealer incentive off, £500 finance incentive off, and then I managed 10% discount so we paid just a couple of quid under £9000 for it new, after a year and 12k miles I got £8700 trade in against a 1 series which was also the cheapest in the UK, so the Aygo is obviously sought after.

I never buy new, but 3 year old ones were going for £7500 then, so it made no sense to not buy new for £1500 more.

It looks ok, but you could get a lower mileage, younger C1 for the same money. Also take into account insurance (group 1 vs group 16), VED (£20 vs £175) and fuel economy (~60 mpg vs ~40 mpg). On the plus for the Fiesta, it has more room in the rear, actually has some boot space and performance is quite a lot better.

Fiesta is a more grown up car, no doubt about it. Slightly more expensive to run compared to the Aygo.

As for the Aygo/C1/107 being 'frightening' on dual carriageways? Is that a serious comment?

Yep. Seriously lacking in longitudinal and aerodynamic stability above 60 or so.

Utter bullst.

I drive one day in day out on the motorway. I am above those speeds daily.

It's not even remotely unstable in any way, well into 3 figure speeds.

It wouldn't be sold if it was dangerous over 50mph; Perhaps you didn't have the tyres inflated properly?

May be the op should drive both as there are very different opinions on the Aygo.

What he said. My Aygo is my daily driver, but I've also done 600 mile holiday trips in it, and many trips up down the A14, M11, M25, A12,etc. It will cruise just fine and is not at all scary in fast traffic. And in the Aygo, don't expect to overtake easily on single carriageways. SWB on the Aygo makes certain rippled surfaces a little uncomfortable. The Fiesta would be more refined, I'd expect.

In town, second gear and the surprisingly good handling makes it a lot of fun. Four-up, it is very different. Not so much fun.

One thing: Aygos at that price may have suffered the leaky seal problem, so check the floor and boot for water ingress. (This was about the only real issue, so I bought an 09 facelift.)

The Aygo's residuals are some of the best.

Another vote for the Aygo/C1/107. Cheap to run, good on fuel, Toyota mechanicals, and good run about, noisy on the motorway, but 70mph is not too painful on the ears. Interior is by Fisher Price?

Downsides the seats are not the best, and the aircon is a bit weedy and you can feel the drag on the engine, but its better than nothing.
