Before you all start to hate the thread, remember the above post resulted in a successful purchase of a Lotus 2-11
Next the commuting car is being upgraded...current car is a Alfa GT 1.9 (no issues with it during my ownership)
The only requirements so far are :
Must have 4 doors
As new as possible
Mileage under 60k
Budget around 10k
So far in my radar are the following :
BMW 7 Series - 740/ 730 from 2006 onwards
BMW 5 Series - seems to be slighty older
Audi A6/ A8
Jag ?
Not sure if i have missed any other worthy options

Which Jag(s)? I have an '07 S-Type which has just ticked over 60k (bought with 50K), and while it does have 4 door if you are carting around adults you may find they are abit of a squeeze in the back and also a lack of useful door pocket storage/shallow boot may be a surprise. However from the front seats it is the most comfortable thing I've ever sat in and the engines are good. 6sp box is lovely and smooth (I don't ever see the point in DSG's) and my commute is unbelievably relaxing.
XJ X308/X350 vintage - apparently the same as the S but bigger exterior dimensions.
XF guessing first versions? - again no proper first hand experience but the owners club I'm with says the seats/ride are rubbish compared to the above two older options. However other people love them. Short test drive I did have in one of the newer 2.2D was a let down with the (8sp) autobox playing hunt the torque...

What did you think of the A8, VW and 7 ?
Cheers
A8 - Lovely inside, very option dependent but makes a good commuter car.Cheers
7 Series - Would have been my next choice if I hadn't gone for the 6. big car but the quality of materials leave Audi in their wake and are very understated. Good range of engines and the whole car has an understated quality. I wouldn't have considered if it were not for a friend who had one and suggested it.
VW. Loved these so much that I persuaded my old MD to buy a couple of them which he tried moving away from and always ends up back there. However, they have dated more than the others and I have never felt any affinity with VW's so discounted purely on those reasons.
What are you leaning towards at the moment?
I bought an Audi A8 almost exactly a year ago.
07 plate - 85k - FASH - absolutely perfect condition - stack of paperwork including the original sales invoice for £72k.
I paid £9,500.
Just about every conceivable toy, air suspension gives magic carpet ride - really happy with it.
Would be a fantastic contrast to the 2-11.

I'm looking for something similar'ish at the moment but not a lot out there that really takes my fancy (so might stage 2 the Octavia!).
Out of all the cars I saw, the A8 was the most interesting. 57 plate, low miles, 3.0 TDI Quattro tip S-Line with every imaginable extra. A whole great bit boat load of car for £10k. Didn't drive it but had a sit in it and it was a lovely place to be. Looked at a 5 series - nice car but the interior is erm, 'minimalist'. I normally like minimalist but the Audi was head and shoulders above the 5 series.

Agree with this for the S-Type, I loved mine, but the rear sears whilst big enough for most of the people i know were shockingly uncomfortable XJ X308/X350 vintage - apparently the same as the S but bigger exterior dimensions.

What is it with big saloons where you can't even get 3 kids in the back because of some crap in the middle of the seat! Just scrubbed that from my own bucket list.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
