Seriously, at times it drives me mad on there. The managed motorway is generally very good, but I seem to keep getting stuck behind morons at all times of day.

If the overhead signs say 60, then I set the cruise to 65 seeing as the speedo over reads a bit, and go happily on my way. Unfortunately, I keep coming across these "speed up between the cameras then brake" merchants. The funny thing is, I have to brake for them at each bloody gantry, so if they just stuck the cruise on like I do, or held a constant speed with their right foot, then they'd actually be going faster overall.

Baffles and frustrates me, in equal measure. It's like the majority of motorists just can't understand reasonable logic.

You're not alone. It's even more baffling and frustrating when it's Average Speed Cameras rather than Managed Motorway though. WTF do people not understand about the word 'average'??

Had to explain average cameras to a non-ph mate about 6 months ago, he was horrified that "our government" could do "such a terrible thing"

I think he might be off to start his own revolution

Either that or the people who sit at whatever the posted gantry speed is or a bit less (measured by their speedo) in the outside lane for miles.
They seem to have a brain fart and forget that just like in normal motorway conditions, you can actually let people overtake you. hehe

On A dual carriageway on my commute there are two 50 mph cameras on each carriageway, on way home it usually both lanes are down to 40 mph after the first one , then after second one there is mad rush to 60 despite a junction for a row of houses and a crossing - then in national limit it seems to be stuck at 60 mph.

I do so love those who move into overtaking lane and speed up to 60 - then seem to stay there because they want to turn right at roundabout in 2 miles.

Absolutely. People come up behind me and I think "Jesus, you're going to get yourself a ticket..." but at the end of the day, it's up to them how fast they want to go and I have no wish to police anybody, so I move aside for them and let them through if I am in their way at all.

Much the same as in the 50 limit down the M1, mindlessly plodding at a speedo 50 or usually slower in the outside lane.
It really is a frustrating stretch of road to commute down at the moment!

Isnt it an average of the readings taken at each camera?
wink

Not according to the BBC.

BBC News said:
One camera - the entry camera - films your number plate as you enter a controlled zone and starts a timer. When you leave the zone, the exit camera films both your car and its number plate.

If there's a match with the entry camera, your speed is calculated, and if over the speed limit the evidence is passed on to the police.

I feel so sorry for you people moaning about actually going at a speed over 6mph, try going over the fking Runcorn bridge pretty much everyday for nearly 10 years, it's wearing me down, I wish the mothman would come so it collapses taking me and my miserable commute with it.

Not sure about that...confused

M25 southern section currently has about 10 miles covered by average cams.

There is plenty more than one at start and one at end.

To be fair, I often have weeks where 6MPH is but a dream on parts of the M62.
Touch wood tomorrow isn't one of those days again. hehe

I did commute for a few months years ago into Manchester City centre, queuing from Junction 7 on the 62 was not that uncommon, when I say queue it certainly felt like it.

I left in the end, miserable miserable....

I've been living in Germany for the last 30 years, but every time I drive over to England to visit the family in Yorkshire I'm struck by how irregular the travel speeds are in England. It's almost impossible to maintain a constant speed, the sheer amount of cameras on the route I drive (Dover to Huddersfield, M2, M25, A1(M) etc)is fking annoying, and I think contra-productive to road safety. Mainly due to all the fkwits speeding up between the cameras, only to brake when a camera comes. It's pretty pointless trying to use the cruise control, a complete waste of time actually.
After driving over, and then back again, I'm always really relieved to be driving in Germany again.

"Each section" of the averaged stretch. You can't get away with it by driving 75 mph through the first 3 cameras and then slowing to 25 mph through the last 3 cameras for an overall average of 50.

I totally agree and do he same as you with managed motorways/avg speed camera stretches with the cruise control.

Some real fkwits out there. Had a tosser trying to race me on an average speed camera section of the m6 near bham recently. Kept slamming on before the cameras and then hooning off. I can't say I hope he gets a ticket, but he could have done with learning what average meant.

Are they the big yellow cameras at the side? I'm fairly sure you mean the gantry cams yes?

If it's the gantry cams then they aren't average cameras AFAIK, they are straight forward instantaneous speed cameras (granted, they aren't always switched on)

If that is the case then what is the point of all the cameras in between the first and last camera? (assuming there are no exit or entry slip roads or junctions, as is often the case).

All that jazz

As someone that had a regular evening run from Bradford to Lichfield and back every night I thought that the M62 and M1 average speed cams were a royal pain in the arse, but my run now involves travelling the M6 between the M1 and Stafford every night... You can give me the M62 and M1 roadwords any time please. No idea how long they go on for but with the exception of a few short sections that entire stretch of M6 is all average speed cams at the moment. It's bad enough through the night when there's not much on the road but I feel sorry for the poor saps that have to endure all that through the peak periods. frown
