TDCi mondeo hitting limp mode over 3k rpm

Hi guys
I've a little bit if time on my hands at the minute and am thinking I could spend it wisely to make a few bob and keep occupied at the same time.
Neighbour has rolled up today with a replacement vehicle after his tdci mondeo (02 plate I think) had been sat still in the drive for two weeks.
I had a chat with him and he says every time he accelerates hard over 3k rpm the car drops into limp mode, engine light on and revs restricted. Switch car off and it goes away for a bit.
Anyway, he's decided to eBay it as it stands but offered me first refusal for beer money.
I'm not interested in breaking it, I don't have the space or capacity for eBay idiots!!
So, which one of you is going to tell me exactly what the very common problem is and where I can buy the suspect part for a tenner that'll see years of motoring out of it again?
P.S if it's a cheap fix it may get sold on at cost to my hard up MiL so genuine help appreciated.

A colleages Astra TDCi is doing this.
Check the actuator on the waste-gate, it may be stuck shut, thus excess boost is being generated which the ECU will take an exception to.
A fault code reader may well yield more information.

- edit - might not be stuck shut, might just not be working due to dead solonoid, electrical or vacuum fault. Easy enough to trace out I'd think.

I had this problem with an A4 diesel I owned some years ago: It was basically going into limp mode when the turbo was spinning up to a reasonable speed which basically made it impossible to go over about 65 mph.
After much dicking about, I determined that the source of the problem was caused by a very small hole in one of the turbo vacuum hoses (something the dealer couldn't figure out for some reason). I replaced the offending hose and the car ran fine after that.
Dunno if that's your problem, but it might be. The OBDC error log indicated an overboost condition on the turbo, so it might be worth checking to see if the error it's reporting is similar...

This, common problem on the mondy - turbo actuator fault. I recently repaired the same on my mercedes (common on many cars with a garrett turbo) and saved myself the cost of a new turbo.These people refurb the part:

The difficult part is getting the actuator off the turbo depending on the location, once off you can pop the cover off the actuator and look for damage, some of the mechanical parts can be replaced yourself, the electronics need to be done by a specialist as above, however drenching it in electrical contact cleaner may temporarily sort the issue.
If it only does it under a reasonable amount load than it's very likely to be an overboost problem, which could be caused by the the actuator or stuck vanes within the turbo (if it's a VNG). Getting the fault code would be first priority to confirm this though.
If it's purely RPM related and it goes into limp mode irrespective of engine load then it's less likely to be boost related, but the fault code will still be the best way to start diagnosing it.

I had this on my 05 Mondeo and it turned out to be the EGR valve. The car did have 130k on it though. It's at 170k now and still going strong If it's not been serviced regularly it will be clogged up. Dead easy to remove and clean, and I think on the older Mondeos you can remove and blank off without issue.

Thats what fixed mine with those symptoms, I chose to do it though as the car was valued around £5-6k at the timeETA - fault code reader will be best place to start before you buy it. The injectors need to be coded and it's not a DIY thing unless you magically already have a coder

A leak off test will show this up.
It can be DIY'd but probably not worth it as most places that will recon the injectors will recode for free.
Lots of info on talkford inc details on the code reader you need (being a pre-facelift a f-super wont do the job).

My 04 mondeo was the same. Filthy job but very straightforward. Whilst the egr is off, reach up into the manifold with a wire hook & remove the crap in there too.Injectors.
Could be cheap (just recode them - £30), could be expensive (just replace them - £800)
Accelerator pedal.
It's a standard variable control electrics box, and they do wear out with similar symptoms. £150 fitted.
Turbo and associated other issues.

buy a F super off fleabay if you have a laptop, £20
if its a P132B fault its the variable vane operating ring stuck and can be sorted cheap
if its a P132A fault its a faulty actuator, £100-£200
recon injectors are £105 each plus vat but need fitting and coding (which the F super can do), price is exchange
