Hello.

My dad and step mother (60) are thinking of chopping in a 4 year old z4 and a 3 year old 116ise (HO HO I KNOW I KNOW).

despite everything i say and despite the fact that they aren't exactly minted they think they want to go from two perfectly reasonable cars (albeit one of them slow/a bit pance) that'll last for ages to one Freelander.

it'd more than likely be new (i know i know).

because they've been on the speshulneeds juice they'd probably want petrol too but i think i can rescue this at least!

so what else is there other than the freelander?

it can;t be a hyundai or a skoda or anything remotely logical. it has to have a badge that will at least mean something to other rural faux-middle class people because they're idiots. well she is anyway. my dad could be persuaded to get something good like an Octavia Scout but there's no chance she will have one of those.

i think something like the Tiguan is most appropriate.

is there going to be a Q3 and will it be 4wd?

are there any 4wd normal cars any more? i can only think of the impreza now. even the golf is 2wd only (i'd love to think i could convince them into an R!).

various 4wd cars from Subaru or Audi would IMHO be preferable.

At least the new Freelander is supposed to be a heap more reliable than the old model.

Ford Kuga
Coming down in price now, and in top spec has some very useful toys.
Always looks sharp (IMO!)
Drives beautifully if a tiny bit noisily.
Not massive inside, but more than comfy/sufficient for 4.

Ha, ha, ha, that just about covers every car, since Freelander (Gaylander) has been so bad.

Kia Sportage, with 10 year warranty.

The Ford Kuga is definitely the best bet, although seeing as they like BMWs, what about the new X3? Probably quite pricey, though!

as i say some sort of daft misplaced snobbery won't allow such a logical or informed choice.

i think the hyundai ix3blahblah sort of thing has potential for people like them..but it's like flogging a dead horse suggesting something none-western-european (yes my dad knows where the 'zed' is made but she doesn;t!).

the subaru is the only thing that could be outsider. unless there's something new from honda i have missed (because the old crv is too much of an old person;s car i think they think).

Skoda Yeti and take the badges off.
Nissan Juke wink

BMW X1 as they're concerned with badge...

What they probably want then is a Rav 4, looks good, resonably cheap to run, don't know if it'll fit in with the badge requirments though. Trouble with the Freelander is that its REALLY expensive. I was in a LAndie dealer the other day and they had one stickered up at over £44k.

The best decision however would be to take a Subaru Legacy Outback, last of the old model for about £15k with all the toys that'll last at least 10 years and fit all the requirments listed.

...they have a friend with a full fat Disco..
the hilarious think is that i said ..'you know what the x1 would be fine for you' and my dad said 'yeah but their 4wds aren't supposed to be any good'.
and i was like 'what, and the 116i is a 'proper bmw' is it..???!!'

if they'd bought a focus/golf/anything 4wd and just put winter tyres on it we wouldn;t be here..! and they're still going to have to find out that the 'off roader' they buy will still be a bit crap without the right tyres..

but, you know, what do i know...

I hate it when it comes down to looks and badge snobbery..we're all guilty of it to an extent I guess.. but the new BMW X1/3 are quite, quite awful to behold....
The Ford however, well they should just test drive one. Build quality is very good, and in all areas it is not comparable to a Puma...

Here's my tip when 'helping' relatives choose a car - let them have what they want and it won't be your fault for three years if they subsequently don't like it!

FL2 is great car now and Broadspeed are doing some decent deals on them via your local dealer from £22k brand new.

Not much wrong with my Missususes 2.0D Tiguan. Does the job it's intended to, and if you raid the options list can be a very nice place to be inside.
It felt better screwed together and nicer handling than the Kuga we test drove.

Old people quite like Forresters as well - I think it site well with the country set.

So, are we correct in thinking they have moved into the country and think they now must have a 4x4?

My dad used to have a herd of cows and never needed one and I've been working on farms for all of the 20 years since leaving school and would rather my scrotum be stapled to a porcupine than drive/own the aforementioned pieces of Scensoredt.

I sense some badge snobbery also, so my advice to you would be to recommend something that is both expensive and rubbish but with the right badge. Would an X3 fit the bill?

yes

Fab car, really well made, fantastic spec and great looking.

Don't like the badge?

Simple, stick a different one on it wink

The new Subaru Legacy can be had in both petrol and diesel. It's a favourite with the country folk.

Sorry to ask the daft question, but what are they using it for? Mainly off road - then LR is probably best choice mainly on road then buy an estate car.

Refer to it as the Volkswagen Yeti and provided your dad takes it to get serviced chances are she'll never know the difference. yes
