Entirely down to your personal circumstances.

For some unknown reason I've always thought of 28 or above decent, 27 or below seems low spin Obviously depends entirely on the car though.

eta; those figures in my 1.8 Focus.

If you can afford to fuel 31mpg, and don't begrudge paying for it, then 31mpg is ok.

If you can't afford to fuel 31 mpg, or begrudge paying for it, then 31 mpg is not ok.

To be honest it depends on a few things, I'd add up the cost of running each one (in total - car value, fuel, insurance, maintenance, tax etc) over X number of years. Without a bit more info its impossible to say either way.

Sub 20s as an average is 'pricey' to me.

AS everyone else says - if you can't afford it then it is pricey. Or if it is interfering enough with your income/expenditure to prevent you doing other things.

To me it depends on the car - the TVR I know is 20mpg if I am lucky, the Passat is 50mpg. It wouldn't be affordable to use the TVR for all my driving.

Doesn`t matter what your car does to the gallon,it depends on wether you like the car or not, currently it`s costing me between 50-60 quid a week to go to work and back, if I was putting 40 quid in a car I disliked I would begrudge every penny.
31MPG in a Mustang, amazing.
31mpg in a Fiesta tdi, frightening. See what people are getting at.

Confused by this.
All depends on what car you actually like surely?
If you get 31mpg from the BMW you really wouldn't benefit much from changing to a Corsa would you?
In my case if I done this switch it would probably save me £200 or so a year. Buttons considering.

I guess it’s a matter of perception really.
For my sins I have a Discovery TD5 that returns around 28mpg, which I feel is quite good for a two and a quarter ton 4x4. I also own a Golf MK4 1.8T GIT returning around 30mpg which feels to me to be a bit on the high side for a small car.

my e46 330ci averages around 30mpg which i dont think is too bad, given that i could sell and get some like a 1.6 focus which would probably average around 36mpg. but i guess it depends how much your spending on fuel. i only fill up every other week on average so it doesnt bother me, if it was something like every 4 days then i would of kept my 306 TD

IMO 45+mpg is good/very good
30-40mpg probably what the average person gets
20-30mpg what to expect with something thats got abit of grunt, a van or a 4x4
-20mpg HGV etc, or something that i will more than likely be jealous of the owner forhehe

Remember that mpg is only part of the group of expenses involved in running a car.

Sometimes, mpg is not even the biggest cost...

If I'm commuting then less than 50mpg is pricey.

Out for a blast then I don't care.

31mpg doesn't seem too bad to me. The 2.5 in my Alfa is averaging 21mpg. Perhaps if you're questioning your fuel consumption to the guys on here, then you do need to change for something more frugal? Generally speaking I wouldn't expect PHers to ask that sort of question unless your fuel bills are starting to interfere with other aspects of your life?

I can stretch a service interval, I can't move a destination closer so it depends on if you are prepared to be a little hard on your car and miss a service.
So mpg is the least easy to adjust.

I'd class 31mpg as good. I'm looking to increase mine to mid/late 20s if possible (although I doubt it'll happen). Petrol is likely to keep getting more expensive, use it now whilst you can still afford to.

But on anything more valuable than a shed, depreciation is usually the biggest cost. It is often not worth changing to that newer, more expensive diesel when you factor depreciation in.
