Are EVs more, less or no different to steal over regular ICE cars?
I'm seriously thinking of getting an EV but havn't heard anyone mention about possible thefts - or even if they are a target like other higher end cars?
I'm assuming for those EVs that use your phone as the key, theres maybe a little more security over someone nicking your keys as the phone will need unlocking too.
With all the tech in Evs too, if stolen, would they have some kind of in-built tracker via gps without actually buying a standalone tracker?

Not sure how susceptible they are but I did see a tweet from Thames Valley Police (I think) recently saying they got into a chase with a Nissan Leaf, it didn't last long as the battery died and the car stopped rofl

That was a fake tweet (Sandford Police, still funny tho hehe)

The EV's I've owned (from BMW and VW) have all had an app which shows you where the car is located.

Thats actually a good point and also, an EV isn't a 'breakable' in terms of stripping it down as selling off parts.

Good question, I've wondered this myself.

I'd imagine high end, like a Tesla, would be a target of steal to order but for joyriding and for smash n' grabs, an EV might not be so convenient to a scrote.

Like any consumer gadget - just take the batteries out when you park it up and you'll be fine.

The new Tesla model 3's (not sure about the other models) have a sentry mode which pretty much turns your car into a mobile CCTV unit :')
It lets anyone on the outside who gets too close know they're being monitored and recorded and will send the driver a notification if there is any contact to the vehicle which is pretty cool. Think it only records when the sensors are activated and then 30 seconds after they've been deactivated

Sentry mode, no physical key, PIN protected start, GPS tracking as standard and no real market for stolen parts would suggest they'd be a very unattractive theft target I'd have thought?

The Tesla CCTV mode has lead to many arrests in the USA. There are youtube channels which post things caught on it.

I'd have though that once criminals know the car does that they will stay away.

Batteries are already starting to become valuable on the second hand market, often for non automotive uses.

I'd expect soon EVs to be stolen and stripped for those cells / packs / modules at some point..........

Not to mention anything that forms the basis to accident repairs. Panels, doors, glass, suspension, wheels, it all ends up on e-bay.

Wasn't the driver locked up for dangerous driving but the car released without charge?

He was only detained until a positive identification could be made....
