997 turbo or VX220 turbo +£50k in the bank??

Ok so please don't crucify me for starting this topic! But I'm out to get a new toy which will be (almost) a daily driver - but something fun and fast. I have 2 small kids aged 2 and 6 but a second car - a family shed so not too concerned about practicality. This will be used 3-4 times a week but with 80-120 miles per trip.

Should I get a VXT which have always appealed to me based on pure driving fun and rapid performance or a Porsche 911 997 Turbo (convertible). Likely a Gen 1 unless you can convince me a Gen 2 is worth the extra £10k?? Oh yes and you get an extra £50k in the bank and lower running costs with the VXT.

I know the 997 is the better car - obviously - but is it worth all that money vs the VXT?

Your thoughts and comments would be appreciated :-)

so 400 miles a week? gotta be the porsche. If its only combined 80-120 miles per week then more likely the vx220

Really depends on what value you place on driving enjoyment.

Why is the only choice these two cars? They are very different.

VX220 is not going to be nice to drive daily, they are taxing to get in and out of and very sparse inside.
911 Turbo is a big GT car that weighs twice as much as the other car.

For around 50k you could get a 2015 Lotus Exige that would be somewhere in between the two or heaps of other things...

No it is around 400 miles a week! My job is erratic, it may sit outside for a week untouched or take me on a 200 mile round trip. But average is 80-120 miles, 3-4 times a week. Thanks for your advice!

I'd get a better car for the kids to travel in first. Does your wife drive the shed ? Get her a newer car that she and the children will be safer in and then buy yourself something swift but safe too, whilst you have small children who rely on you.

How about a Volvo XC60 (or whatever she might choose) for the wife and children to travel in (£20k for a year old car) and an M5 2013 model for yourself ? Total cost about £50k.

I've not been in a VX220 but I've got a V6 Exige and if those miles are on boring roads then I'd not touch the VX. If they're drivers roads light of traffic then the VX would be up there.

Why not get both!

Not at the same time obv, but the vx220 is likely at the bottom of its depreciation curve....get one, run it for as long as you like then move it on and get the Porsche (if you still want it)

Porsche. If the VX is built anything like an Elise 400 miles are week will bring trouble. Some areas of mine Elise had worse build quality than the Westfield I had before it.

I found the vx seats really uncomfortable on my legs and my head im only 6ft but it was all wrong id have another though wink

For that length of time commuting take the 997 over the VXT. Trust me, you won't thank yourself when you're de-icing the insides of the VX windows when you're running late for the office.

I couldn't physically get into the VX when I was offered a sit in one.

Very disappointing!

The wife drives a very safe car - a new diesel Nissan. Not quite a shed but a boring box.

I dont think of cost as money outlaid. Cost to me is depreciation and the reason for choosing these 2 cars is that I believe both are at or near the bottom of their depreciation curve. A 2015 Lotus will drop in value overnight and 'cost' a lot more. Plus both the 997 and VXT are fast, fun and convertible. That's really my only considerations in choosing a car and arriving at these 2.

I'd probably prefer to have 2 or 3 nice cars over a 997.

You might want to check the prices of used Evoras before dismissing them on a single financial decision based on depreciation.

Beat me to it. If you've a £50k budget, the VX is a small financial risk to you, even for a short period to tick the box. If you buy now at the best time to buy a summer toy, and stash it until springtime, that could work.
