Clio 182.. What next?
Discussion
After 2 years of countless smiles from my Clio 182 FF - it's time for a change.
With around 8K to spend, a Clio 200 CUP seems like a logical choice but what else should I try?
It's only driven 6 months of the year with the other 6 spent in London so practicality is not top of the list. However it must be raw, involving and make me smile!
What would you buy?

I had a clio trophy then i bought a house and ended uo with an old volvo. As soon as i could i got a new car, i was after a 200 but ended up getting a Lotus Elise instead. You might be able to get a 2.2 VX220 in budget. Will be similar in performance to your 182 i would imagine, but its the way in which they drive makes them so good. Depends if you can put up with 2 seats, leaky roof, noisey etc. I daily drove my vx and my elise for over 12 months and didnt think they were to bad
I went from my Clio 172 to a Honda Civic Type R (FN2)....then swiftly back to a Clio 182 But that's another story
I'd say, based on your want for raw and involvement and a budget up to £8k, you'd need to look at:
Honda Civic Type R EP3
Honda Integra Type R DC5
Honda S2000
Clio 200
Megane II RS230

Porsche 944 S2.
Won't be as fast as the Clio but not a lot is in the real world. Very involving with that classic vibe. May answer go for something different or you will just miss the Clio.
Had an 944 S2 and driven Clio 182's, would say the 944 felt quicker, 0-60 in six versus seven for the Clio, like you say, not a huge amount in it but the Clio felt gutless low down, where the 944 is fairly grunty in comparision.Won't be as fast as the Clio but not a lot is in the real world. I went Clio 182, EP3 civic type r and got an e87 130i 2 months ago.
The Clio was like a go cart, the CTR has a great engine and I am very much enjoying the BMW, which is a little more refined than both.
Other than those two, I looked at a mk5 golf r32 and various incarnations of Renault sport Megans before settling with the BMW.

I really enjoyed my 182, and would second the suggestion of vx220 above (with the caveats). I had one 10 years ago, and have just bought another (for 6k).
No quicker in a straight line probably, I woyld suggest maybe slower in the wet unless you are very competent, but much more fun and involving overall. The engine is less rev hungry than your 182 which is a shame, but driving position/sound of the engine behind you/unassisted communicative steering makes it overall a great drivers car if you don't need the spare seats and boot!

A 944 of any vintage feels like a relic from a bygone age, which for some people is a plus, but for me they have no redeeming features. I would buy a Boxster personally.
Yeah, true but they are rather nice, however, not really an ideal daily these days, you can, and people do but having had one, I wouldnt again. Thanks for the suggestions. Some great ones!
I think for me turbocharging the Clio would ruin it's spirit for me. I don't really have the time to organise the work either at the moment - heard they are great fun though.
S2000/VXR220's sound like great possibilities - something I haven't considered! Can't say a 944 floats my boat really - a little too much of a classic for what will be a daily.
Anymore suggestions?

If you can push a bit more maybe a MK7 Fiesta ST2? I was happy to let my 14 plate go for £9500 until it got stolen before selling. A bit more power, comforts and the low down torque from the turbo make it a nice upgrade.
I'm debating a 172/182 at the moment as a commuter. Just a little concerned about being a bit too old and throwing up some bills.

Maybe worth looking at something different?
A step sideways (to another hot hatch) is always going to lead to direct comparisons and with the 182 being one of the best in the business at fun, could end up being a bit disappointing.
If the VX220's are a bit much then maybe an MX5 would be worth a drive.

Hmm, I've heard fiestas are superb so would be keen to give one a go - but they are almost as common as Golf R's and if possible I've always enjoyed the satisfaction of owning something a little different! Great suggestion though!
Yes you're right, something different would help reduce comparison - the S2000 looks very tempting in this respect! In regards to the MX-5, having driven one I was neither overjoyed nor disappointed - I thought it was a great car but never really got my pulse racing.

I went from a Clio 172 to a 2016 VW Polo Gti and don't regret it one bit.
I would say if you are going to move away from the Clio then maybe like me get something that addresses the Clio's shortcomings.
I'm not sure a Clio 200 is going to be that much of a difference. Yes it's bigger and more practical, nicer inside etc but it's basically the same torqueless gutless engine and it gets really bad mpg in comparison to the lighter 172/182.
It all depends on your budget. Maybe something rwd or maybe something turbocharged would be the way forward?
Driving my current GTI is a pleasure compared to the 172. Driving position isn't all awkward and impossible to H&T in and it's also got bags of low down turbocharged torque which feels great compared to the bloody 172 that wanted thrashing absolutely everywhere to get a shift on.
R26 Megane?

The Clio 200 cup with likely feel less 'raw' than the 182, bit heavier, much more stable/grippy. Would say a mk3 Megane would be the obvious next step but the budget only really covers a mk2.
Yes, I have heard this! Most I have spoken to say they are a better drive for it but the loss of 'rawness' is a worry. I'll have to drive one to see for myself. I would very much like a Mk3 Megane CUP but they are, as you say, currently a little too much - even if I could afford one i'd then be in M3 territory and that could potentially start a whole new ball game!

Your new GTI sounds lovely! Although I think we have different views on this one, I think the reason I enjoy the 182 so much is the fact you have to really drive it to get the best out of it! For me it's quirks are what makes it special for me - I would like to try something turbocharged but I think for me the the race to the redline always bests low down torque! A Megane Mk3 sounds like the best option I just need to rob a bank first! lolI would say if you are going to move away from the Clio then maybe like me get something that addresses the Clio's shortcomings.
