Hi all,

The dreams of the mustang will have to be put on hold (again). I need a reliable steed to eat the motorway miles. I don't expect I'll be doing moon miles because of WFH but I expect that I'll have to travel somewhere for two hours at a stretch, I'd like to get there without pain in my lower back and general feeling of exhaustion.

Budget: let's say up to £10k, but I'd like to understand that there may be a sweet spot above or lower that. It might be worth paying a bit extra for something but I don't know what that might be (adaptive cruise control is probably not available at that price point?)

Not too bothered by road tax, mpg, mileage, depreciation. Reliability and comfort for the motorway would be the big factors for me, so I'm imagining something Japanese.

If there's good suggestion for £6-7k then I'd go for that instead of spending an extra 5-6k for something which does the same job.

Mercedes CLK320 in Sport spec as they come with the Orthopedic seats as standard you'll get a nice one for between 4-6k they're bulletprooof.

Also if you add something like a Pioneer SPH DA230/250DAB & you'll (I have the 230 unit & it works perfectly with both my Samsung & Iphone) have all the modern connectivity you could need.

A bit more & the Infiniti M 30d S Premium (these are also Caz/ULEZ compliant:

Or if you want a petrol the the G37 S Saloon is the pick:

If you want to spend the whole 10k then a W212 E500 is a great buy:

I have a Lexus GS 300 SE-L for my weekly 600 mile commute.

The ‘Ronseal’ car as it does exactly what it says on the tin.

Disposable in terms of financial outlay but perfect for the job.

I was looking at some more interesting stuff like W220 and W221 S-Classes - very comfortable seats, but not sure if they fit the reliability requirement. Also considered some diesels, but suspect reliability on those too - things like Audi A8 4.2 TDI, Saab 9-3 TiD, even a Citroen C6 2.7 HDi, but thought better of it!

Thanks guys really appreciated the guidance from all of you. It was good to know you don't have to spend 10k to get some comfort.

Volvo's a bit meh (for me). LS460 looked huge, no doubt it's exceptionally comfortable, but could I get the same comfort/quietness for less running costs? The E500's front looks like an s-class, in a good way (or was it just me). I'd consider an old Audi, not because it's an Audi but because I think I could get a big engined car that won't cost an arm and a leg to maintain (probably guessing they'll be an Audi-tax at the garages? so maybe that's a no then?) The wife won't countenance anything French (Brexit, plus a renault espace we had with no end of electrical gremlins).

From those supplied, I think Drezza nailed it with the lexus GS-300, but the CLS 500 looked awesome (I didn't know they were so cheap - I think I'd probably need a slush fund of some sort) and the infiniti M also looked like amazing value. Plus had a sunroof, better numbers (mpg/newer etc.).

At the moment, it's between the CLS and infiniti and the GS 300 as the runner-up. Thanks again.

I can vouch for the F10 BMW 530d especially in SE spec.

Lovely cars. I had 2 and they were superb at chewing up the miles.

The 3.0 engine makes the whole thing feel more relaxed.

Early SE saloons are in budget.

5 series all the way

Albeit in 530 guise big refined cruiser

Put 1100 miles on mine couple of weekends ago in a single day. Built for that sort of thing

Same with either an E class or A6

3 series on small wheels, does the job perfectly, not too big or small.

It was the best rep car made, perfect for the job.

Superb input from both georgeyboy12345 & ZX10R NIN. I've little to no interest in actually buying any of the 'which car' threads on here but I always look at them and wait for your inputs so that I'm introduced to cars that I'd never ever consider for whatever the OP has posted

I doff my cap to you both.

The suspension on the CLS will be the biggest expense but it's not as costly as it used to be (to be honest anything with air/hydraulic suspension isn't cheap) at around £500 a leg exchange.

Also if going for the CLS500 is where you end up going then I'd go for a 5.5 500 they came with a few nice updates & more torque/power. The one below is very good value & low miles too:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202109067...

Out of this & the Infiniti M the 5.5 would just edge it for me (& it is just but I'm a sucker for a torquey V8) ) but it reverses if it's the 5.0 500 as the M's heated/air cooled seats/roof better infotainment & being newer with similar performance to the 5.0, make the Infiniti the standout for me.

S80 D5 is a good shout.

I'd take a good hard look at one of these:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202110128...

Very fast, pretty much silent at any cruising speed and not much that goes wrong with em. It's slightly cheaper to run than the GS300 too.

An IS250 will also do the trick (if its just you in the car) rear seats are a bit cramped.

Yep got to agree this is perfect 3series territory. You can easily get a fairly low mileage 330d for that kind of money -

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202109117...

Great to drive, great on fuel. Not that bad around town, does everything you need really. Only reason don't mention a 5series is that its that big bigger and do you really need the space and others have already mentioned it.

But yep, that is what i would be looking at. If the diesel option doesn't tick your box and i can understand why in current climate it may not. What you sacrifice in mpg you get back in smiles per mile. The 330i. Silky engine, lovely sound and still the same motorway munching capability.

Oh they are, particularly in that gold. And I am a Volvo owner.
But.
Very little beats them as a motorway mile muncher, heated leather armchair on, brilliant stereo, solid as a rock in all sorts of weather and just a really pleasant place to be.
And if you look carefully, there are some S60's lurking north of 200bhp....

That said, the Lexus' seem a good bet for similar reasons.

Looks ace, but, jaguar

Discarded the CLS, will just be worrying about when the next thing will go wrong on it. So plumping for the infiniti.

There's now a M37 appeared on autotrader at £6k near the other S Premium garage.

M37

S Premium

As I understand it, M37 is the petrol automatic with the same engine (albeit slightly detuned) as the 370z. Higher tax / lower MPG, which isn't too much of a factor. Is there any reason to consider this over the 3.0d (handling - admittedly not that important to me, v6 noise - good then bad after 2 hours of it, features - not clear which trim version this is)

I'd be inclined to say the M37 is an S Premium as it has a heated steering wheel & the Bose system. the M37 is actually quite quiet, if you're fine with the fuel then I'd go M37, it's the same spec & cheaper.

Volvo V60/S60 D5 Auto. My dad had one for a few years, amazing mile muncher. Adaptive cruise, xenons, heated everything is easily available at that price.

It was also incredibly reliable for the 80k miles he did in it.
