I have a dilemma because I love the looks of the new Emira, especially now that Lotus have opened up the colour range. BUT should I take the plunge or should I go for a really nice 997 C2S, or 997 Turbo or even a Cayman GT4 3.8. Whichever I chose it will be a weekend car and I currently don't have time for track days.

If I had that kind of cash I'd have the Lotus.

I'd say Lotus but when you're down to 2 or 3 cars I'd say only test drives will give you the answer you're looking for.

You could order an emira now, buy a 997 and enjoy it for a couple of years before the emira turns up?
I've been waiting almost 2 years for mine & have enjoyed various cars in the interim.

Plenty of Emiras on Autotrader. I agree with the other poster, test drives needed.

Quite a few early niggles apparent with the Emira, and added to the delays/financing price increases quite a few people have jumped ship from their orders. Depreciation is likely to be an issue if that's of concern.
In a year or two when all the niggles are sorted and reliability is known I might be tempted with am Emira, until then I'm very happy with my GT4.
Nimbus looks fabulous from what I've seen so far if you do want an Emira now, but getting a test drive/finding a local dealer with one would be a start at least!

I'd say lotus. Unless a late 997 GTS.

Not helpful but only you can decide so need some test drives ultimately. I had a 981 GT4 don’t think I ever saw any criticism of it. I didn’t like it. I wish I’d of tried a 997 gt3 but I wanted something a little newer at the time.

Personally I am a Lotus fan but not driven an Emira. The idea of ordering one and trying a few different cars in the meantime is good,

Saw an Emira for the first time yesterday in Salisbury, it looked awesome.

The Porsche options wouldn't get a look in if it were my money.

I wouldn't bother with the 997 Turbo personally. I think it's too sterile for a weekend car, albeit very fast in a straight line.

It's a tough choice regarding the others and as always it'll come down to your individual requirements. Have you scratched the 911 itch? The F6 / mid engine itch? The Lotus itch? Do you care about interior tech?

I think the Emira is a stunning package, both inside and out, but is it exciting enough from the driver's seat to warrant weekend only status? The GT4 and 997 C2S have the same engine, but with the former slightly de-tuned. Classic 911 vs mid-engined balance.

Personally, which is irrelevant as I'm not buying laugh, it'd be between the Emira and 997 C2S. As a pure driving tool I'd suspect the GT4 would be the sharpest, but you said no track days and, depending on where you live, the roads might be wasted on the GT4. Also I'm so fond of the 718 GT4, I'd feel like I'd compromised too much with the 981 GT4 - even though owners of both report they are quite different on the move.

I'd probably order an Emira, and buy a C2S in the meantime. Caveat being I've already owned a Cayman so have scratched some of the above itches.

The Emira and 981 GT4 are actually not that different in driving characteristics it is the 718 GT4 that is quite a bit more focused but unfortunately that is out of your price category.

Engine on the 981 GT4 a bit of a let down for a Porsche GT with a torque hole standard being a boggo and detuned Carrera S lump which is quite heavy on fuel too but at least it sounds reasonably good from an standard external exhaust pov v the 718 where fantastic induction noise wins the day.

The Emira Toyota engine is better than the 981 and sounds great especially in track mode although it has a fairly lowly 6800 rev limit with much shorter gearing v the Cayman which blunts performance in the Porsche. Great hydraulic steering on the Emira although the epas 981 is very good and arguably slightly better than the 718 GT4s. Gear change on the GT4 is the true Porsche sweetspot and beats the Emiras.

Looks are subjective I like them both but the Emira is undoubtedly drop dead gorgeous and essentially a slightly smaller 458 which many buyers are sold on.

981 GT4 residually is holding up very well indeed with even 8 year old decent spec and mileage cars still over list ££ but many consider them overpriced especially v the £90k+ much newer 718 GT4 spec dependent.

The Emira V6 FE manual was good value at £75995 I was lucky enough to secure one of the last pre price increase to £81995 cars specced mid Feb from July 21 order and imo they are now too expensive at £80k plus new but it depends on what value you attribute to its gorgeous looks and many buyers will pay for this alone. Yep there are a few cars around for sale but the way prices are rising on other comparable new cars and Porsche GTS with more rises imminent incl Lotus this should support future values.

For ref I owned a 981 GT4 from new currently own a 718 GT4 from new and my Emira FE manual arrives in a couple of weeks, apparantly. biggrin:

I do like the Lotus, but it'd be the GT4 for me... just an awesome car.

The GT4 would be my option. Simply because it's the benchmark that everything in this category will/is compared against.

If you want to know how the Emira drives, go and test an Evora 400. It's the same car in a different skin, although the Evora seems to have been a lot more sorted looking at owner's reports on the Emira! Having owned a 400 for a few years, I cancelled my Emira deposit once I'd seen the car in the flesh and have now got a 718 Cayman GT4.

If you are just looking for weekend thrills, I wouldn't have any of your options and would go with some form of V6 exige. (I've got an S2 cup to go with my GT4).

Only today a friend told me someone he knows at Lotus has said he could have a cancelled order within a week or so, so there must be a few pulling out.

Test drove an Emira today, there were 4 cars in the showroom, one of which was a cancelled order. The chap said I could have it today, sadly not in a position at the moment but the urge was strong.
