Aston wins at Sebring

DBR9 slaughters opposition at first outing

Aston Martin Racing’s all-new DBR9 took a surprise GT1 class victory and fourth place overall in its debut race in the gruelling 53rd Annual 12 Hours of Sebring at the International Raceway.

Record crowds saw David Brabham, Stephane Ortelli and Darren Turner, celebrate a GT1 class victory in the number 57 DBR9, ahead of the number three and number four Corvette C6-R’s.

An ecstatic David Brabham, who took the chequered flag, enthused, “Aston Martin is back! This is just such a fantastic achievement for everyone involved in the programme. The team were just superb - to come here and beat such a strong Corvette team is a massive achievement for Aston Martin Racing.”

Car 58, driven by Peter Kox, Pedro Lamy and Stephane Sarrazin took 8th place in GT1, finishing 15th overall. However, the finishing position fails to do justice to the team who completed essential chassis repairs in remarkable time, allowing the car to rejoin the circuit in little over an hour after an earlier collision.

Stephane Sarrazin, who made his Sebring debut today the number 58 DBR9, said: “I found the circuit very demanding – the bumps make for really hard work. Our car is very fast – the team did such a good job to repair it so quickly and get it back to the circuit. We were just a little unlucky today, but it gives us great encouragement ahead of Silverstone and Le Mans.”

A victory at Sebring represents an extraordinary achievement in what is a test and development year for a brand new car and team.

Team principal George-Howard Chappell said, “This is a fantastic result for us. Whilst we still have much work to do ahead of Silverstone and Le Mans, we can clearly be pleased with a win in our debut race against such established competition. Our primary objective here was for both cars to finish – anything beyond that was clearly going to be a welcome bonus.

“We’ve been encouraged by the reliability of the cars throughout our testing programme so far and the fact that they also had the pace to achieve victory here at Sebring is testament to the efforts of the whole Aston Martin Racing team. The whole team really appreciate the overwhelming support from the Sebring crowd throughout this week – especially given the strong home competition!”

Team director David Richards said, “This marks the beginning of a new era for Aston Martin.”

Great news. That DB9 racer is one mean beast to look at. Does anyone know if it will pay a visit to AM Tickford St at any time.

Great result. Does anyone know if the Aston will be going up against the new Maserati GT car at any point in the season? That will be the one to beat I think.

Maserati was at Sebring, so the DBR9 has already collared it!

No Maser`s at Le Mans this year, but the DBR9`s are racing in the FIA GT`s at Silverstone against a selection of (less restricted) MC12`s.

Corvette are still the chaps to beat though.

2 Comments.....

1. "Slaughtered" is a tiny weeny bit of an exaggeration given the Corvettes were 1,2 in class and 3rd and 4th overall until the Johnny O'Connell car had a front brake rotor "failure" at 175 mph approaching Turn 17 at about the 8 hour mark and at about the same time the Olivier Beretta car got nurfed off causing rear suspension damage

2. Why is this report only appearing now when the race was on the 19th of March? Not exactly up to date is it?

Should be very interesting at Le Mans the DBR9s vs the Vettes !!

Not bad for a car still under development

Should give Audi something to think about at Le Mans this year.

Err, why would it do that? It's a GT1 car. The Audi is a Prototype and is substantially faster. And undoubtedly more reliable.

Different classes, you see.

Yes, whether to lap them on the left or the right...

Great result for them and entirely unexpected - if a trifle lucky.

The Maser runs in a different class. Aston's win was in their class only, not overall.

I believe it was a Maserati overall victory.

I don't want to take anything away from Aston though!
Great result!

errr, no. The Maser was in the same class as the Aston so the Aston tonked it. Overall winner was Audi. Aston finished 4th overall, and oh so nearly 3rd, so an even better result for Aston than you thought. Maserati were nowhere.

Marvelous!

I knew there was a different winner to Aston and it wasn't in the same class.

the prototype class cars are a whole different world compared to GT and GTS (though some would say otherwise about the Maser and the Corvettes!)

Some people may disagree

Cracking result for Aston, but they were perhaps a bit lucky both Corvettes had problems. Still, to finish first....
