I used to own a 1.9 DT (which was my first car)
when I fancied a change I was stuck with what I should get, being 19 and therefore with insurance a big consideration I struggled to find something suitable (lots of stuff I could afford to buy, but not insure)

Settled on another 306, this one is one of the last (only Y plate's after this one) and i'm very happy with it, sure it's no GTI but it's as close as I can get at the moment

The car is pretty much standard, with the addition of a Peugeot Splitter, CD changer, Leather Steering wheel and Gearstick, just little things really as it doesnt need anything else, already having GTI spec bumpers, alloys and uprated running gear from the factory.

Took me 3 days cleaning to get rid of the pinky haze, but the paint is pretty good now and a vibrant pearlesent red (diablo red)

you can see my old 306 in the background

car came with morrettes but those were not to my taste, and have since been removed and replaced with standard headlights

(as she looks now)

Yeah i didnt really like the morettes, they will be on ebay soon though, and fetch more than i paid for the crystal lights so i cant argue

as for suspension upgrades, well it has GTI suspension, anyway so doesnt really need anything doing to it.... peugeot knew what they were doing back when this thing was made (shame they have now employed a blind designer and build cars to compete on quality with the likes of VW....which they will never be able to do)
i was after a GTI brake upgrade as its supposedly a bit better, but it will end up costing £300 and the brakes were fitted onto the XSI so can handle 138bhp....my 120 wont be a problem

my plan is to keep the car for 3 years, then i will be out of university and able to buy 2 cars
a 205 Mi16 as a weekend/project car and some sort of sensible daily hack (probably a 330d coupe)

glad you like it, i get constant jip from my mates for it being french and therefore rubbish....but i dont think so

Nice clean 306.

I'm a little confused though, are the HDI models not Dturbos? I was under the impression the Dturbo was the 1.9 and the HDI was the 2.0?

Am I completely out of my tree?

the Dturbo was a spec level not an engine, although everyone just calls the TD's Dturbo's

you can get the 1.9 Dturbo (the green one in the pics) for the earlier cars, then in 1999 they introduced the HDI which was avaliable as a Dturbo spec level
it's the only 3 door HDI, and comes with everything bar leather interior. you get climate/aircon, auto wipers, electric pack, uprated suspension .etc

Very tidy car!

How do the 1.9TD and the 2.0HDI compare in terms of performance and drivability?

I'm looking at getting a Diesel 306 but I've been leaning more towards a 1.9 because they are so bombproof and easy to work on.

Not quite bombproof - I've had 2 of these engines blow head-gaskets, one @ 130k and one @140k ish and one had nearly £5000 of SH when I bought her so I know it wasn't neglected either. I'd go for a nice HDi as you will get about 10mpg more, and a touch more power and refinement for not much more money.

What are they like on long motorway runs? Noisy, comfy etc? Thinking about one to replace the Yaris now that the miles are starting to rack up through work.

I think they're great for that, certainly on a par with the Mondeo 1.8 TD I have now - I've driven over 600 miles a day in each not a problem.

I own a 406HDI for the amount of miles I do and it's brilliant at covering large amounts of miles cheaply.

Climate control, electric everything, low millage for 5K when I bought it.

well the 2.0 HDI is newer technology, and therefore more economical

they both have 90bhp as stock, with the HDI having a fair bit more torque
it also deliveres the power in a nice linier way, there is no noticable lag above 1500rpm wheras the 1.9 DT was quite laggy, but felt more powerful at times because of the boost all of a sudden

now the 1.9 DT can be made to perform really well, get a late S/T reg and they have a different turbo which spools up quicker and reduces lag a fair bit, it can also be mechanically tuned to around 110bhp safely so long as you stick to the 6000 mile service intervals...the engine is simple and a bit agricultural, but more than willing and the core of it is bulletproof, early 94 cars had headgasket problems, but later ones dont tend to go
the engines can do 300k easily with regular servicing (thats crucial)

the HDI is complex, i have had to replace 2 common fault items on mine since i bought it, the Crankshaft pulley (it has gone through 2 in 45k...but a revised part is on now £130
and also the lift pump in the tank was on it's way out (brass filings in the fuel filter, and a hesitant engine) £80
all DIY jobs but a bit annoying really
overall it's a better engine, a remap will have it at 120bhp and there is possibility of 140 with an intercooler (though it's pricy to do and not really worth it)

as for motorway driving, it performs pretty well, the gearing in the HDI is 500rpm lower than the DT (which had to sit at 3000rpm at 70 so that maximum boost was avaliable) though it's not a motorway car really....thats what a 406 is for, although it performs decently, better than a smaller hatch or a 206 type car
the 306 is really at home on A and B roads, from 40-60mph acceleration is really good and the car is refined and economical (55mpg) with the ability to hold on in the corners brilliantly

if your doing big miles then i would suggest looking at the meridian spec, 5 door car with softer suspension, but comes with half leather as a trade off...they can be picked up now for around £2800-£3000...it still has the GTI looks and alloys though

though dont discount the DT, for the price it's a good car, reliable economical and fun to drive, creditied as the first diesel "warm" hatch....mabye not by todays standards but back in the mid 90's it would have been pretty good, overall spec isnt as good but they are still worth a look....and as a first car i cant fault them

Are you entirely sure about that since my S reg Dturbo does 80mph at almost exactly 3000rpm

and I can't get the mpg less than 40mpg.last tank full I did 500 miles till the light came on(about 12.215 gallons) and that included a track day.

ok...so must be about 2800 rpm or something, few months since i have driven the DT on a motorway so cant quite remember, the gearing on the HDI is lower though as you have full boost from about 2300rpm i think

the Dturbo will do 35-40mpg no matter how hard you drive it, the HDI slightly more

if you want more info, get over to www.pug306.net it's a goldmine

as for the headlights, they look crap...but better on the older cars (doesnt look so wierd with the seperate indicator units) they were fitted from new by peugeot as the car was in the showroom back in 2000....i hated them though, looks much more modern with the proper lights
