Bought a 1998 Starlet Glanza V yesterday.

I'm the first uk owner, and is still being registered so i'll not get the car for a week or so as the cars being MOT'd, Taxed and Registered.

Its standard apart from an HKS panel filter, GP Sports back box and uprated shocks and springs. Its been converted to mph, derestricted etc to make it all comply with uk standards.

Still has a lot of little japanese bits on it too. Still got the flare under the glovebox, Japanese tax disc, all the jap warning stickers etc.

Will be a big step up from the clio which is still my first car.

Anyway, heres a few photos that the seller sent to me, will have more once i recieve the car.

yikes No way.

I've got an inkling that those wheels may actually be worth a small fortune aswell...

What bolt Pattern are they?

They are Equip 001 alloys and depending on the size of them (more importantly the width) can be around £300 EACH!
I expect they are 4x114, and i dont think the op should change them either.

Its only costing me £77 more than the clio to insure, it's getting switched from the clio to the starlet on july 1st.

The wheels are staying. They're genuine work equip 01s in 14" with a 4x100 bolt fitment. Don't know the offset of them, but as far as i know they're very rare and quite expensive.

Only thing that i'm not sure about is, when i phoned the insurance company (elephant.co.uk - foreign call centre too :'( ) They didn't take any VIN number or anything, just the car make, model, colour, engine size etc. and that seemed to be enough? But that seems like im not insured on this specific starlet?

More importantly, change the nankang ditch-finders first. . . . .

Keep the wheels or change them for something suitable like Enkei RPF1's

Funnily enough, the enkeis were the other wheel I liked. If i was going to get any other wheel, that's what it'd be.

But i love the Equips, I think they just suit the car. It all obviously looks alot better in person rather than in a few photos.

The Nankangs are brand new, so I'll be keeping them on it for now. They can't be any worse than the "Sunny Sport" tyres on the front of the clio, those are awful.

Like that. Looks tastefully modified which is refreshing as I've seen some horrors on the road.

Good choice. Enjoy it.

lovely car, espicially in black too. Are the rear tints standard? alot of jap machines seem to have tinted rear windows as standard.

As far as i know only a few select insurance companies can correctly insure the Glanza V, many insurance companies will have them as a Glanza S.

Locking wheel nuts then, I couldn't see any on the specific picture.

Nice car, enjoy!
Are these the ones with a button for a temporary power increase? driving

Nope, although it's got a twin mode turbo. Low boost is around 110bhp and high boost is the full 133bhp.

Turns out the insurance company did mess up, they put the registration of the starlet as the same as my current car, and totally ignored me saying the car wasn't registered.

So i'll be getting the car even later frown

BLoody love these little things! I remember getting rather thrashed by one off the lights... More annoying because I was in it's big brother GTFour which was running a cool 282bhp at the time! He went away like his backside was on fire.

How reliable are they in moderate tune?

Brilliant car and sadly, not much left in standard form nowadays frown. I used to own a Starlet SR myself and i'm looking to "upgrade" to a Glanza sometime in the near future.

All the best and keep us updated.

Turns out they did get the insurance details wrong. They filled it out as the starlet having the same numberplate as the clio. But its all been taken care off now hopefully, no extra charges either.

As for some of the questions. It cost me around £4.5k, which seems expensive for a 12yo car, but its seriously clean, and pretty much standard.

As for reliability, as far as i know they can take alot, 200bhp+ does need some forged internals etc iirc as they'll tend to go pop if kept standard.

Its gettin MOT'd today, so fingers crossed it passes.

Firstly, I have some bad news for you. The Admiral (Elephant, Bell etc) group do not insure Glanza's. They are not on the group's underwriters books. I had a great deal of hastle trying to insure my Glanza.

Secondly - 4EFTE's can take 200bhp+ on standard internals. I was running 215bhp on a standard engine and it lasted fine, with quite a few trackdays thrown in the mix. Providing you don't above 1.2 bar you'll be alright, providing you have the correct supporting mods and you use good quality parts and oil.

Looks like a nice clean example. Try Adrian Flux for insurance.
