Boxster S ; Top gear.
Discussion
IIRC about 128.4 (ish)
From the Top Gear web site:
2nd Porsche Carerra GT - 1.19.8
5th Porsche GT3 RS - 1.22.3
...
Porsche 911 GT3 - 1.27.2
Porsche 911 Carrera S - 1.28.9 (very wet)
Porsche 911 turbo - 1.31.0
And you have to remember how nasty the weather's been...the Boxster S was no less than stunning considering the bhp advantage of all the above cars.
Quite remarkable. But no less than I've been saying since getting my first one!

Yup, stonking performance from the Boxster as one would expect. That new SLK looked a right load of pony on the track in comparison.
Steve
The one with relatively tall tyres and not even the optional sports suspension? That was a fair comparison, then
That doesn't matter, the Boxster absolutely stuffed the SLK around the track and the margin was huge. Slightly different suspension and tyres would not have saved the Merc's blushes.

It would not have been as quick as the Boxster, no doubt about that, but the fact is the standard car is softly sprung and that combined with the short wheelbase makes it a handful on the limit. All I'm saying is, if it had had sports suspension and lower profile rubber, it would have been a much more representative test. Even with soft springs, it was still only 1 second slower than a BMW M3, 0.4 sec slower than the Esprit V8, etc. So it's not that bad. Just not as quick as the Boxster S, which frankly seemed too quick for just 280bhp to be realistically true anyway, compared to other more credible performance cars, including various other Porsches. I guess there's no way of knowing if there were only the appropriate number of horses or not, but it wouldn't be the first time that a more powerful demonstrator had been supplied to the media. TVR used to do it all the time.

Come on. It was a credible comparison. Same weather. Same driver. Both cars in standard form as shipped by the manufacturer (conspiracy theories aside) and the new BoxS whooped the Merc's ass.
Simple as that. You don't need "optional sports suspension" in a BoxS
As to comparisons with other Porsches/other TG performance cars clearly they aren't fair as the weather difference has a huge impact...its just a bit of amusement.
As I said on the other thread at a piss-wet Silverstone I was overtaking pretty much everything including Turbos. But the acceleration of Daz'z 996 Turbo makes my BoxS look positively pedestrian. On a dry day 996s (of *any* sort) pass me on the Hangar Straight.

Paaaaaand of sour grapes, SteveP?
Frankly I couldn't give a flying fk what the base model does. What's your point? Mine will have 360bhp, AMG suspension and much wider tyres. The best thing about the SLK55 or a TVR or a Maser or anything else is that it is not a Boxster. I doubt that is a common opinion here, but I won't lose any sleep over it. You can think what you like.

Come on Steve-p, don't rise to it. Its easy teasing with a result like that. I'm sure that the AMG machine of yours will be extremely quick...
Mind you. Has the Box's image changed at all...
Its not libel if its true...
