Would I be right in assuming small oil spots roughly in line with the rear axle and slightly offset to the near side are an early warning sign of RMS failure?

Early warning sign is a non turbo or gt3 based 996.

Bah bloody humbug and happy christmas Don't believe anyone who says tiptronics don't have RMS failures

Ah well, it's only money, I'll get it done when she goes in for service over christmas. Anyone had one done at an indie? I hear the going rate is about £750 at an OPC, how much will it cost me at an indie?

How many miles has your's done Bliar. Just had a major service done on my '99 tip and the RMS was dry as a........dry thing. Mines just clocked over the 40k barrier and according to the previous history the RMS has never been done.
Fingers and all other crossable things are crossed.

37K.... Be afraid, be very afraid

Having said that, the main crank seal has been gone on my Primula for two years now with no ill effects whatsoever apart from oil spots on my block paving. However, I'm a little more nervous about oil feed around the bearings on the Porker and a new engine will cost a bit more than replacing my shed, so I'll get it done.

Still cheaper than getting a warranty

Claims on rennlist that the GT1 block isn't immune either

Oh well an OPC tech did say to me off the record he'd not seen nor heard of a tip with the RMS issue, guess he will have now.

Hi,

Around this point are the 997's based on the 996's 'cheaper manufactured flywheel offset model' ie. are 997's likely to suffer similarly to 996's.

Some seem to have mentioned that certain 997's have already shown this kind of weakness, is this for sure. I have a 997 4 S on order and am also interested how long run residuals on this car despite warranty protection in the begining.

997s are vulnerable to it. Again there is more info on rennlist. There was a suggestion there, that this problem can't really be engineered out and is a fundamental limit of the current design given the size of the engines, weight of drive train & etc. Sorry I can't be more specific, but have a look on rennlist if you are interested.

I would say depending on the extra labour involved it would be prudent to replace the seal when you have the clutch changed on a manual, it should only cost a few quid more.

Correct.

Make SURE the independent has the updated tool, which inserts the seal FURTHER IN (so to speak...)

I understand that Porsche have a new design seal and a new tool to insert it. I had mine done under warranty 3k ago and dry as a bone.

Thanks for the 997 info, lets hope they hold up better than the 996's

Oh come on now you make them sound less reliable than a knackered old Trabant. And given the number made and on the roads that clearly isn't the case.

Here here! Let's enjoy the cars rather than knocking them all the time!

Here here, they are great cars still. Anyway, I'm sure it won't break the bank to get it fixed at an indie and it's still a lot cheaper than maintaining a Tuscan

BliarOut,
I had a pretty bad leak on the rear nearside, and, like you, thought it was RMS. It wasn't... it was a crankcase breather tube that had split.
Just had it replaced (v simple job) and no more leak. Also running smoother now as breather tube affects the mixture. So don't panic just yet..
Apparently it's quite a common problem.
