Strange Marks Above Exhaust (GT3 RS)
Discussion
On my GT3 RS, although I guess the could apply to any white 996? Then again maybe the RS bumper is made from plastic?
Got my car back today after having the geometry done, and noticed some strange marks on the bumper above where the exhaust is. The marks are on both sides, but I also get down on my knee's to polish the exhausts and I can't say I've ever noticed the marks before?
You can feel them with your finger, they are also visable from an angle.
I guess it must be the heat from the exhaust cracking into the plastic bumper, but I wonder why it's only started happening now?
Anyway, if you have a GT3 RS could you go to your car, look on your bumper directly above the exhausts and let me know if you see anything?

Just looked on my GT3 MKII and no marks can be seen at all... To me that looks like something has scratched the bumper and has been 'blown over' with a spray gun.. Can you see any colour changes in the white at all?

This is very strange then, as the marks are ONLY above the exhausts.
I have waxed the car 10 times since I've had it, and I polish the exhausts everytime, so really think I would of noticed these marks.
The car has been away for 3 days, then the marks appear?? Too much of a coincidence?

on the face of it seems more than coincidence especially as you've never noticed before and you regularly clean that area/exhaust tips; must be worth a call to the place you had the work done; very odd - hope you find out what has happened

Below is a picture I took of the exhaust LAST WEEK. I've tried to zoom it to see if I can see the marks, but I can't make them out? So definatly think they are new.

I know it's only a car etc etc and it's going to get marks, but it just bugs me that I don't know how it got there. Stone Chips etc are fine, but these are a complete mystery.

To be honest I've got pretty much exactly the same marks on the bumper of my civic.
I know the cause of mine however, I very lightly touched a BBQ when I was backing into the garage
They seem to be depressions in the paint, not scratches because there's no break in the paint, might be something to do with a bumper being softer than metal panels?
I'm not sure of the exact design of a RS bumper but is there a slight lip as the bumper follows the curve of the exhaust? Then it could explain the longitudinal scratch lines if they'd backed it into something at that height.
Another point, can you feel them with your finger nails, if yes then they are probably impact marks I would reckon.

My guess is that the car has been stationary with the engine running for a long period (10 minutes plus) after having been taken for a drive. When the car is moving the heat is not a problem but when the car is stationary the exhaust is cooking the plastic and the heat will eventually build up enough to deform the plastic.
Have a chat with Colchester OPC or with a plastic bumper repair company. One of them will have seen it before.
What's the new geometry/ride height like?

They do seem to look just like scratches or a gouge and definitely are not on your before picture. It is possible that the garage had something that sits just at that height, maybe wall mounted.
Given that they are above the exhausts, is it possible that they put something over the tips to vent the gases out of the garage, and it is this that has gouged the bumper.
Having said thath, if they had made some attempt to paint the area and cover up any damage, they would have bothered to fill the wholes first as they do stand out a mile.

I think your right, that sounds the most reasonable explanation.
My car was on the lowest ride height, thats why over certain bumps it was touching the road. They raised it by 6mm, and then did a fast road setup.
On the motorways it now feels like a normal road car, rather than the car kart if felt like before.
Wont be as good on track, but it's used on the road 95% of the time so suits me fine.
On the way to JZM is a speed hump, before the splitter touched it when trying to get over, on the way out, no problems. Although it's only 6mm higher seems to make a differance.

DO you reckon I should call the garage and ask? I don't want to create any bad vibes with the garage thats the only thing Im worried about.

I would imagine that there is no harm in asking them about these marks on the grounds that they weren't there before, I can't imagine that they would get too upset, if they are decent.
