usual story with clarkson not being a 911 fan....

http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/arti

I have up to now turned down the offer of a test drive, so can't directly comment....but the conclusion is as I would have expected.

Yep, and the roads are getting slower.

What a load of crap, that's a typical review coming from wierdest shaped man in the world (no wonder he didn't fit the seat!)

About 20 paragraphs of absolute crap (as per usual) and 2 paragraphs of the car which is even more crap! He is obviously still pissed about being outvoted by Hammond and May regarding the 997 a few Months back!

Two things on this; firstly Clarkson does not like Porsches full stop so no point in bothering to read his scribblings as they will not contain a decent word about anything they build. Secondly, if he cannot write a decent amount of words about a specific car you have to question his ability to continue to do so. I cannot see why the Sunday Times continues to allow him to write 80% of his column about something completely alien to a car section and only 20% on the vehicle in question.

My opinion is that he is now so full of his own TV importance and no longer in touch with Petrol Heads and our need for a balanced and objective review of cars.

I read it every week, and it often makes me laugh out loud.

I'll read a magazine for a proper review, Clarkson is just a bit of light entertainment.

Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and we all thankfully don't like the same things. I guess a lot of you hold similar opinions on other car makes (TVR for example), which don't agree with those of owners of that marque.

Clarkson's opinions however are a little too extreme, and designed to provoke this kind of reaction.

I have to agree in some small way with Clarkson, I found my 993TT one of the most boring cars I have owned. I just couldn't generate any enthusiasm or excitement to drive it. After a 'spirited' drive, it just left me cold. And I have had a few Porsche's over the years! I had loads more fun in my 993 C2, and at the moment I am borrowing my mates G reg 3.2 Targa (complete with whale tail), and it is a right old giggle to drive! I am really enjoying its raw basic appeal, it even sounds fantastic!

People have different opinions, yes I agree, the 993TT was an exciting challenge, the 996TT was one of the best sports cars ever produced and the 997TT I cannot coment on but if it to go by the 996, i'm sure it will be superb!

As for Clarkson and his opinions, who is Clarkson?

Doesn't cause any reaction as he talks the biggest pile of shit ever!

He's actually an accomplished writer, journalist and broadcaster. Sometimes he's entertaining, sometimes he's controvertial, and sometimes he's as daft as a brush.

You certainly wouldn't buy (or not buy) a car on the basis of his reviews. However, from time to time, he is very incisive, and his judgements can be very accurate.

In the case of the 997TT he may well be correct. It is Porsche's 'flagship' model with power and technology being the main ingredients. That doesn't necessarily make a great 911, where 'feel' and 'involvement' and 'simplicity' are often much more rewarding characteristics.

Let me first state that I'm not a Clarkson fan. I enjoy watching 'Top Gear' for its entertainment value, but I regard Clarkson as an overgrown schoolboy who happens to have a way with words. He seems always to have overplayed his likes and dislikes to the point where he is hoist with his own petard. He's on record as disliking the Porsche marque, so he has to slate them. To keep some vestige of objectiveness, he has to admit they have their good points. Just look at his comment in this article. Having had a go at various European traits and ending up by telling us that German humour is based on maths, he says:

"This becomes obvious when you look at the new Porsche 997 Turbo in the 911 series. You’ll note it’s the 997, which means it’s one newer and one better than the 996. But it isn’t one better at all. It’s millions better. If I’d made it, I’d have called it the Porsche Jesus Christ Almighty Would You Look At That Bastard Go."

You can't call that an anti-Porsche remark. Whatever he says after that, he's summed up the new model in a way that ought to make any owner or potential buyer moving up from a 996 proud of his choice!

Of course, as a 993 owner, I might take a different view!

Exactly a writer, journalist and broadcaster only!

I'm sure everyone can remember Tiff's review on the 996 Turbo and I'm sure everyone watched Plato's review on the 997 Turbo last week.

I watch both Top Gear and Fifth Gear and love them both, I actually don't like/dislike him, I just think his personal reviews on cars are absolute bollox!

I remember watching one where he complained about hitting his head of the roof! lol.

It was the same with Top Gear, 80-90% was nothing to do with the cars but about Clarkson trying to be funny and failing miserably.

The Auto programs in Germany are simply superb, normall at least an hour long and discuss the cars 100%. There's also no stupid attempt at trying to inject any childish humour in aprogram where it would be completey irrelevant.

I'd say he was more than a little pissed.

His dream car that he had been hyping up for the last 5 years was slaughtered by the 997 in the road test with the stig (by 6 seconds).
On top of that, he actually prefered the M6 to the Aston.

his face when the 911 won was just classic.

The guy slags off American cars for years then buys one, and an unreliable heap at that...........what does that tell you

He told us his GT40 was still stuck at an airport as it wouldn't run properly. As detailed above he'll slag off American cars but will then go and buy one. As I said this morning tw@t

Lets face it the majority of his popularity comes from being controversial. He's well known to not like Porsche's, and has become well known as an Aston fan at the same time, totally conincidentally, that Ford put him on the list of 25 "approved" GT buyers.

Most of us could have guessed exactly what was in that review before we'd read it. He's slaughtered the Cayman, preferred the M6 to the 997, and thought the CGT was boring. I guess he gets some marks for consistency, or predictability.....

Crikey, you lot need to lighten up. He's just an entertainer so enjoy the show. I read his column for a bit of a laugh, even though I rarely agree with his point of view.

A German motoring programme that discusses the finer points of tread wear rates for an hour sounds like the dullest show on the planet. I'll read that kind of stuff in a magazine, thanks.

You've clearly never watched a German automotive programme

The last thing you want to do is take Clarkson seriously, but ignor him at your peril. He carries as lot of clout when it comes to public opinion. I think he's extremely funny, a very clever man who'll blow apart a lot of pomposity; just what we need right now. Instead of a war, we have Clarkson.
If he could drive though, he'd be dangerous.

Ok fair enough. But come on... a German... discussing cars.... for an hour??

I have to say I like shows like Top Gear, Have I Got News For You, and They Think It's All Over. Specialist subjects made mainstream and funny, which makes them accessible to the general public. Means I have control of the remote control because the wife will watch with me.

It also means that the general public may come round to *our* point of view - in an age where the Government is slowly suffocating our will to live, thank God for low-brow light entertainment motoring programmes.
