How much will you pay ?
Discussion
Climate change/global warming. That's all you can hear from the media , Tony Blair and his coterie .(Wasn't he the one who told us we were in danger of annihilation from Saddams WMD ?)
Those of us who are lucky enough to own a Porsche or any other car with a fair size cubic capacity , can now be assured of massive increases in vehicles excise duty, fuel prices, general running costs and road charging.
Those in authority have all but stated that their plan is to price people like us off the roads.
The question is this. How much will you pay to retain ownership of and enjoy your Porsche before throwing in the towel ?

It's just the early days of election planning. In 2 years it'll all be forgotten.
The day such extreme scenarios are at hand and yes, that may be sooner than one might suppose, you might find large numbers of blokes jumping around in a black capes, trying to recall basic chemistry experiements...
It is pure, unadulterated communism and the need for that extreme, right wing alternative, now essential if Britain is to exist with any broad range of freedoms after the next 5, certainly 10 years.
I suspect a military coup may eventually transpire.

I know I'm on my soapbox here and have bored y'all with similar comments in the past , but the Irish government have had this type of system in place for years.
We pay a tax called VRT on ALL cars but the tax hits 30% the value of the car once it's over 2 litres .. So for example , if I was to import a 2002 996 from the UK the tax man would dip me for around 24000 euro.
And it doesn't stop there ... I've just payed my yearly road tax .. I can't remember the exact figure (I probably have a psychological blockage about it !) but it's in excess of 1200 euro for the year.
The thing that surprises me is that Irish petrol prices haven't been hit .. YET .. I'm hoping the parliamentary tree huggers don't log on to this forum!!!!
I fughin HATE the system , but it makes me enjoy my car all the more .. not to mention the fact that there's less porkers around making ownership all the more special.

im convinced this is all about nuclear energy.
of course the encumbent shower of social workers, closet communists and muppets will certainly lose their core idiot vote if they introduce a nuclear build program. obviously the tories dont want to win power and then have to introduce it either. they all know its comming - its the only currently viable choice.
just watch the scare stories - you'll all lose your cars, pay thousands in tax, no more long haul holidays etc...etc... in a few months a sacrificial backbencher, whos been caught in a park with his trousers round his ankles, will say "hey maybe it doesnt need to be so bad, how about some more nuclear plants instead"
"yeah!" and all of a sudden everyone forgot nuclear energy is evil.

Ouch! Is VRT in addition to or instead of VAT? Does the VRT apply to just new cars or second hand as well?

Yeah it applies to all cars being imported into Ireland by Irish residends..It's seperate from VAT , it only applies to cars , VRT stands for vehicle registration tax .
If you want a giggle log onto wwwcarzone.ie and find the page of 911's ..
I brought my '99 996 in last year from the UK , it cost me 60k euros to import .. I suppose the upside is they're still selling for around that price in Ireland..
So you guys are doing okay afterall!!!!
Enjoy them while you can, because it'll just get harder and harder from now on. The frustrating thing is that if the UK stopped consuming carbon entirely, we'd only cut 2% from global usage. The world will never agree on a joint strategy and stick to it, so basically the extra taxes will just top up the treasury. So nothing will happen, and the problem will intensify until disaster strikes.
This would be a slight concern if it weren't for the fact that the United States will bankrupt the world economy well before the natural planet gives in. There'll be no cars then anyway.
Can you imagine what depreciation will be like once people do start panic selling out of their high consumption vehicles?

Simon, Good for you. I was wondering when someone would raise the subject of massive depreciation in the value of high performance cars.
That's why for me ,increased running costs to be imposed by the government are such a bitter pill to swallow , having saved all my life to buy my dream car ( Mk1 GT3 ), only to find that within the forseeable future I simply will not be able to afford to run it.

Nothing will happen overnight, but will gradually get worse and worse. Just drive it whenever you can and enjoy it. I reckon in about 5-10 years fast cars as we know them will become extinct. At which point I'm shamelessly intending to take up heroin, sell everything, leave this country and go elsewhere. By then I think my GT2 should be worth about 18p, and I'll have to pay someone a hundred grand to take the X5 away.
It`s all scam, what ever the tax it isn`t going to stop people using their cars, they`ll just put it in the pot and mark it down to the cost of driving, besides how many people really pay that much detailed attention to their finances. If you want to save 20% on your motoring costs don`t drive at 85 on the motorway, drive at 70, it`s more economic. Similarly don`t pull away quickly from junctions and reduce speed gradually that way you`ll save even more petrol.
Ultimately those on low incomes will be hit but those are the very people driving more fuel efficient cars (although you might argue being older they are more polluting). someone earning £30-40k a year just plods on.
It costs £8 to drive through London (soon to be extended). Does it stop traffic, does it bollox. Everyone moans but still pays up. ultimately there isn`t much of an option.
Tonight we`re off into town. I live on top of a tube station but we`ll still be using a car because a). I don`t fancy sitting on the tube or changing trains in a dinner jacket (and mrs F in a ball gown. b). I don`t want to get mugged, raped or murdered. and C). because I won`t be able to get home as the tube shuts down at midnight.
If you really want to reduce car usage then provide a clean efficient and country-wide public transport syatem that people chose to use and see the car as second best.

Unfortunately Mrs T created a collection of private monopolies who have zero interest in integration, or indeed anything other than the bottom line.
