With a new baby approaching within 6 months, I'm sad to say that my 2003 996 may have to go. I can't really justify getting a second car as I commute to work and my wife uses the 996. We'll probably get a second-hand sensible car for a few years and then back to a porker. However... this raises an important question...

What could I buy for around 25K-30K, use on the occasional weekend out and wouldn't sit around depreciating in the garage - In fact! - It would be great if I could even justify it as an investment, nevermind the depreciation.

I've been looking at the early 80's 930s, some early 911s and even the cheaper end 356B's. Does anyone have an opinion what earlier model porsche would be a great investment and good for the odd run at the weekend???

Thanks in advance

Get a pre 73 911.......you might get a nice "E" model for your budget in RHD....wont depreciate, just buy a good one in first place........and drive one, as it will feel very "old" after a 996.

930 is a good place to go. You cant beat that iconic status. I had one for a year and a bit and sold it for a tidy profit. If you can find a 3.2clubsport, they are very sought after cars and great fun to drive.

I'd agree - the 2.4E is one of the nicest pre-73 cars. Good performance and brakes, very rewarding to drive, less peaky than an 'S'. Buy the best 'ready to go' example, restoration costs are frightening and hard to predict. IMO rhd coupe would be the ideal choice. Try www.ddk-online.com and speak to Nick Moss (amongst others).

Also agree with Chuckie about the 3.2 911 'Club Sport' - one of the nicest ever 911s, and being fully galvanised, less prone to the frightening rust problems that can aflict the earlier cars. Unfortunately, the Club Sports were only made in small numbers so prices are at the top of your budget - but could be the best buy. Contact the 911 Club Sport register at Porsche Club GB.

I would definitely consider a 930.

Mine is up for sale for a figure around where you're looking and is quite special.

For something pretty depreciation proof, well galvanised and fun I don't think it gets much better IMHO.

Good luck.

And I take it if I went for a 930 or a pre-73 911E, I should look for one that was as original as possible, without any modifications???

I think 'originality' is key.

I'd recommend a late 3.2 Carrera with G50 gearbox - a mint low mileage narrow body coupe, or a Club Sport (for driving), or perhaps a Speedster (for posing).

Not sure about Turbos, and 964RS is ultimately a track weapon.

Can you still get a nice (i.e. non-rusty) RHD 911E for less than 30K?

I think a 930 is a more likely candidate.

Oh yes. But it's all a bit of a minefield.

Do you want a car that won't depreciate?
Do you want a car that's nice to drive?
Do you want a car that has a good chance of appreciating?
What sort of use do you want to put the car to?
Will it be garaged?
Is there a specialist who knows these cars near to you?
What colour do you want/don't you want?
Do you want RHD or LHD?
Do you want to carry children in the back?

Id recommend different cars for each of these questions - not just pre impact either...

Had mine 2 years. Loved it to bits. Sold it very easily for what I paid.

Very few around though - best bet would be to contact the PCGB Register guys & ask them (very nicely) to tip you off to anything good that comes on the market.

Am I the only person that thinks if a post ends in 'buy mine its in the classifieds' negates any advice given in said post, regardless of how good it is?

Oh, and other than that, I can't offer any help - I wouldn't know where to start with a 'non-depreciating 911'

Right Rubystone, here are my answers:

Do you want a car that won't depreciate?
Yes Please!

Do you want a car that's nice to drive?
Yes, though, it would only be for the odd weekend drive in the summer

Do you want a car that has a good chance of appreciating?
Ideally

What sort of use do you want to put the car to?
Weekend driving only - definitely not track

Will it be garaged?
Yes

Is there a specialist who knows these cars near to you?
Not that I'm aware of

What colour do you want/don't you want?
Nothing too garish

Do you want RHD or LHD?
RHD

Do you want to carry children in the back?
Not essential

Have you thought of taking a gamble and going for a 'future classic'?

something out of vogue at the moment, therefore cheaper, but could have the chance of selling for big bucks in 10 years time?

I wouldn't have a clue what it could be, but worth a punt maybe?

I think I just made a mess in my pants. If only I could use that every day I'd be sorting out to look at it now.

So. The 3.2 Clubsport fits your bill well and can be bought for £25ish. As someone else suggested, talk to the register secretaries at PCGB. I don't have their contact details here, but can get them for you. They have managed to document nearly all of the 40 or so (?) UK cars and are aware of those that are for sale. I doubt one of these would lose money and they are meant to be sharper than a standard 3.2

A RHD 964RS is just about achievable on your budget, but I far you'll find it too compromised for road use, unless it has been modified.

To my mind, a 930 is not a cast iron investment - perhpas one of the later 5 speed cars, but by no means certain -they are not to everyones' taste.

An RHD 2.2 or 2.4S is my tip for future appreciation in value. Some optimistic traders are already talking theese cars into above £50k prices - but they aren't selling those cars....but choice is limited and there are plenty of poorly (and incorrectly detailed) restored cars out there. Yes, the 2.2E and 2.4E have less agressive cams and more accessible torque lower down the rev range , but equally they are just that little bit less "exciting" to drive. When I had my E engine rebuilt, I had it rebuilt to S specification - made a good deal of difference...but don't discount a mint E - buy on condition too!

A final suggestion - one of my favourite sleepers is the impact bumper 2.7 Carrera of 1974 - the rebodied classic 2.7 RS - falls in your budget and just that little bit "different" from other impact bumper offerings....
