Mornin' all

Reluctantly selling my V8 Vantage (meteorite/black, 06 25k miles) at the end of this month after 2 fabulous years. Question is: has anyone experience of trying to sell privately, rather than to dealers? Reluctant to sell to Stratstone only to see it marked up £10k immediately on the forecourt. Do people buy AMs privately, or do they want the 'comfort' of a dealer purchase? Need to decide fast, as warranty expires end of June. Obv if selling privately will renew it for £1k, if selling to dealer pointless...anyone any thoughts on how to proceed?

Thanks - don't need money urgently, but do need to be fairly sure i'll be able to sell it privately in the end.

The last time I tried to sell a high value car privately, I got messed around no end before I did a 'Sale or Return' with a dealer with a guaranteed bottom line price.
They were happy 'cos no cash outlay - I was happy not having to pander to wannabe bargain hunters (or tele-sales!) - and the purchaser, as he had 'dealer' support, finance, warranty etc.

Sold my DB7 Vantage through the classified ads on here. Took about 3 months (in mid winter). I had no particular problems and I got alot more in my bank account than I would have received had I sold it SOR through a dealer (Chiltern's offer to buy outright was £12k less than I sold it for)or at auction (even paying a reduced sellers fee and getting top of estimate at the Bonhams Factory Auction) . The purchaser also paid less than he would have had to pay in either channel and I am happy that my old car found a good new home. What's not to like, as the illiterati say?

don't mean to hijack this thread but i'm in a similar position. i want to sell privately but i'm not sure what to ask for for when a prospective buying comes to look and take a test drive.

i'm thinking both parts of driving license, another proof of address (e.g. utility bill), proof of insurance if they want to take it for a drive.

can anyone who has sold a high valued car privately give any other advice on this?

No test drive only passenger rides - unless you want to age rapidly

Mines been up for a week now and it may be gone already (as its the cheapest DB9 Volante on sale) with me taking a S2000 Honda in px as a sunday runner which will be lovely

I expect to get £10k more than dealer offer

Hi I have just sold MY06 with 6500miles on the clock no real problems. A lot of initial calls mostly looking for silly prices. However I had several really serious offers in the end I got pretty nearly the asking price. Like you my warranty and tax were due. The whole thing took just over a month all told, I think if you put effort in it should sell providing its in very good condition. Don't despair if does not sell first time since I had several offers after the sale had gone through.

T

I had not renewed tax or the warranty

I looked at 9 V8VR's before buying the one I collect next week.
2 were private owners but I found them needing remedials the sellers were unwilling to do.
As long as you are realistic (like DSLiverpool) with your pricing and expectations you should be OK.
DON'T let them drive it, if they are serious they can get it inspected.
BTW DSLiverpool if you need any info or a once over of the S2000 let me know.
I've had four and used to mod on s2ki.com, plus I'm in Chester wink

most main dealers will have a 10k margin in a modern Aston......from that they may have to pay for a service/wheel refurb/tyres and supply a 12 month warranty, probably 2-3k worth of cost plus some space to negotiate on price....most will pull 5k out of the sale

Thanks. Pilgrim - did you take out the new warranty and tax before you put it on sale?

if you get fed up of tyre kickers and time wasters (I did) then you can always do a sale or return arrangement

Last time I sold a car, after a month of mucking about, I ended up using Driven Image up in Yorks (about an hour from me) and it cost £1250 for them to market/sell the car

Benefit to seller: no hassle, get a good price, not full trade, but not low private either

Benefit to buyer: can get finance, warranty, car is prepped professionally, "dealer facilities"as it were, and usually better than a trade price, but more than bottom private price

Obviously the trader doesnt have to have money tied up in lots of stock - just make sure you use a reputable company that isnt going bust next week, you have a contract with the trader, and you keep the V5, spare keys etc until the money is in your bank wink

This thread I find really interesting I have been asked on quite a few occasions if I would be interested in selling a car on the owners behalf and have always said no (just something I have never been involved with), How common is getting someone else to sell the car and is it something I should consider, When researching warranties I was told that this was only possible if we sold cars as well, So possibly worth considering but unknown territory for me,

Crikey the autotrader magazine came out today and I have been inundated (well 5 emails / calls tonight) considering its been on PH / ebay for 5 days and trader site for 3 days it seems the magazine is the weapon of choice.

I have a financial chum who can arrange finance for suitable candidates so fingers crossed.

That's because the Autotrader website is so hard to use.
