Do you need the discrete video card that the MBP offers?
Ditto larger screen etc.
For me if I was buying, it wouldn't be, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth it! smile
I assume you're comparing a mid to high spec MB and the lowest specced basic MBP as well?

I had the same decision between macbook/pro and went for the 2.4 macbook in the end. Upped the ram to 4gb from crucial and just changed the 160gb HDD for a 320gb from scan. Bought a Time Capsule as well and has worked out cheaper than going for a pro. Only thing I wanted from the pro was the backlit keyboard but otherwise am more than happy with the macbook and it is more than quick enough.

Firstly, don't do anything as new MB/MBP's will be out this side of Christmas. I would expect them in the first half of October.

Secondly, try to use the correct spelling and grammer when producing a post. One would imagine you are on some kind of placement, so try and impress the management. I know that mine may not be perfect, but try to make an effort please.

You can get USB lights - used a lot for live work and saves on the illuminated keyboard.

I think the pro offers the multi touch track pad that the book doesn't. I went for the pro over the book because of the keyboard and screen size, I have no need for the increased performance but the screen was too small for me on the book.

If you know anyone in education you can get nice discount too.

FWIW I have a backlit keyboard on my G4 Powerbook and its rubbish - I leave it switched off.

My hands obscure the keys and it's really no help at all in the dark. If you're used to typing, you know where the keys are, and the screen gives enough light for those times when you forget where you are.

This could be the lack of contrast between silver keys and white backlight, but I wouldn't use this as a decision making criteria.

I think the backlit keyboard on the MBPs (and earlier powerbooks) is great. Mine is on most of the time because the machine is usually used in a low lit room. Personally, I wouldn't be without it.

The extra screen real-estate is a big thing. OS X does feel so much better on a larger screen. IMO, 1440 x 900 is a minimum. Bigger is better but, personally, I wouldn't bother with the 17"; that's just a little too big for a laptop.

As others have said, don't do anything right now. New or revamped line is just around the corner.

Thanks for the info.

Out of interest, how do you know these things? Is there a good website to find out about this stuff?

But it's just rumours - so don't rely upon it as being gospel.

True but to be honest it makes sense, plus apple have already released, that they are going to put a form of the mac os program in the touch and nano model, and for the past three years they have released new ipods in september. A financial advisor has said to expect a release becasue apple are pretty much driving all there macs and nanos out the door with a back to school program, plus its just in time for that early christmas buying, the specs however are just rumors, but the rumors about a tablet mac that works like the ipod phone and touch wont be out in october it will take at least 3 years of development in order for them to get the tech write, but i expect the new macbook to have the touch pad that the mbp had earlier this year, and for them to revamp the design that has been on the macbook for 3 years and is getting a bit stale,

jesus that was a rant, incase you havn't noticed i love apple a lil bit

I have tidied it up a bit for you.

Please try to write properly. It makes life so much less painful for those that you want to read your posts if they contain capital letters and don't look like they were written by a twelve year old.

That's more than a little bit over the top.

The grammar may have not been good but at least it wasn't condescending and rude.

Good job nobody was asking you then.

It wasn't just the grammar, it was the whole thing: Spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence construction and use of wrong words. It had the appearance of being written by a twelve year old (or fourteen in deference to the OP wink ) and was just sloppy. It takes less effort to write properly first time than it does to go back and correct it afterwards. It should require no more effort to write properly all of the time, even on forums, than it does for formal communications. It should be just "how it is", "what you do", naturally.

Finally, it wasn't condescending and rude, it was helpful and informative and had a polite request attached. If I had wanted to be rude I would have been.
