HTC Desire. Better than an iPhone too.

Is pretty and purse friendly size a bonus? If so, SE X10 Mini/Mini Pro.

How much cheaper is cheaper and what does she want to use it for?

This.

Replaced an iPhone 3G with a HTC Desire, and couldn't be happier. It does stuff, and the battery lasts more than 14 minutes.

Desire and Samsung Galaxy S seem to be the current pick (I think they are virtually the same phone as well).

For a lady then the Motorola Flipout is worth a look.

Android and an interesting form factor. I've played with one, its a good device.

Anyone know if the HTC Wildfire any good?

Slightly smaller has less processor memory and a slightly inferior screen, but still has capacitive touch screen. Reviews don't seem to think the processor memory is much of an issue, and I think its got Android 2.2 (could well be wrong about that thought)

Anyone here got one?

Amazing... hate the bloody iPhone but evangelise about a different phone that does everything it can to copy the iPhone as much as possible.

Copy the iPhone? In what way? Having an internet browser, app store and touchscreen?

Decent little phone, still on 2.1 at the moment (I think) but HTC have promised it will be updated before christmas.

Worthwhile if you are on a budget, but if you have a contract with a decent number of minutes the Desire only costs a small amount more, and is worth the extra (IMHO)

Do all these alternatives use a similar screen to the iPhone - i.e. the ones that you have to use your fingers rather than your nail? Same question for my girlfriend - she wants an iphone but struggles to use it. she doesn't have mega long nails, but struggles to use my iPhone.

Yeah, the Desire doesn't work with nails. It's a bonus for me, keep the OH off my phone and using her own old Nokia. smile

The Skodafone assistant said its a bit like comparing an SD and HD telly when I had a play with both.
My contract is only £5 a month different, so went for the Desire over Wildfire smile

Another shout for the Desire here too.

My GF also wants something similar to an iPhone but Apple products are banned from my house(not trying to Troll, just don't like the Apple brand/prices) so looking for something like the Desire but maybe a bit smaller, anyone used the Wildfire or Sony Android phone?

The full fat X10 doesn't really match up to the Desire, but I'm a big fan of the X10 Mini. It is aimed at a different market to the iphone/desire/etc but still runs Android so does all the smart phone stuff, but it is a tiny and beautiful thing in a way full fat phones never are. The only downside is that the small screen doesn't have space for a full QWERTY keyboard, making do with a phone style T9 keyboard instead.

But if that is a deal breaker (or for those who find typing with nails tricky) there is also the Mini Pro with slide out physical qwerty keyboard.

She should get an iPhone, everything else is st.

(whenever someone asks specifically about the iPhone some muppet always pops up to suggest buying something else, just thought I'd add some balance by adding something unhelpful here)

An HTC Desire isn't much cheaper than an Iphone though. A 3GS is £419 from Apple. The Desire is £380 - £420.

But a Desire is massively better than a 3GS and an iPhone 4 is at least £500.

And that's before we get to the fact that a Desire is free on a £20 per month contract with a decent amount of minutes/texts/mb
