I think it's unfair to say they are 'built like crap'. I know it's painful to get a huge bill and so must those in the trade. Everybody gets unlucky with a car at some point and mechanics would never tell someone looking for a sympathetic ear 'they're built well you just got unlucky' because that's not what you want to hear.
If you buy an eight cylinder 'luxobarge' over a 4 cylinder you double your chances of getting almost any engine related failure, and you increase consumable parts costs as well. I think the truth is regardless of price it's harder to make a larger engined luxury car as reliable as a smaller engined average car over it's lifetime, and impossible to make it like for like as cheap to maintain or run. I mean that's partly why larger cars don't hold their money well and are a 'bargain' just after the manufacturers warranty expires.
Sorry if I sound harsh but that's the way I see it. I hope you had better luck next time.
I didn't say they were built like crap. The VAG technicians working on my car said they were built like crap. Due to known fault codes. Engine failures were actually expected - based upon their previous experiences. The fault starts with items corroding and causing a chain of events. Essentially VAG saved a few pence on materials, so causes thousands of pounds worth of repairs down the line (Probably a great business model actually). Plus other issues, which may or may not have been down to luck / wear / poor quality build. I do agree in principle that the more complex something is, the more likely it will go wrong. Smaller cars on the whole are more fun, cheaper to run and a whole heap more reliable. Hence why barges are a gamble.

This is an S8, but this Japanese company "technical Garage Sasaki" make $11,000 headers and a centre pipe that make it sound like an F1 car.

Debadge it and you would have quite the Q car.
Bit pointless having an overly loud dull looking estate unless you want to drive around Woking all night and get a section 59 or whatever there called, I'm sure it's a great car but I wouldn't want it with an overly loud exhaust personally, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZqAckA0wMg

Far better off putting a tdi badge on it and leaving the exhaust alone
I have to agree though that unless your on the motorway or dual carriageway it's not really gonna stir your loins after the initial joy of v10 sound
I had one for around two years. Bought it private and didn't lose too much on it when I traded it in. Was a 56 plate black saloon and had just ticked over the 100,000 mile mark when I got rid of it.
Was the best car I ever owned. I appreciate a fast car but I'm not one to hoon on the roads if you know what I mean. Straight line speed was mental fast. Acceleration was a bit on and off. Once you got used to the modulation of the pedal, it was easy get going without giving your passengers whiplash!
Reliability was good. It never broke down on me. You just got the feeling that whenever you went to start the car, it would start. Didn't need anything for the duration of ownership other than regular servicing and tyres/brakes. Tyres were roughly £250 each for AO rated Contis in 265/35/19. Brake parts aren't too bad if you go to Eurocarparts and get Pagids.
I also paid around £1250 to have the non resonated Milltek exhaust fitted. Really released the sound out of the V10 engine.
It's a well specced car. Being the S6, it was top of the tree so you got electric heated seats, BOSE, digital tv tuner, carbon fibre dash inserts etc etc.
I actually loved the car that much that having shofted on my 996 C4S, I'm looking for either an S6 or S8 to replace it.

I've been looking at S8s. How is the sound that different from an S6 if they're both the same engine? I know the S8 is slightly higher power and tuned for torque but surely they both sound similar?
No idead; I've never heard an S6 being pressed on. Most of the time the S8 is quite quiet, burbling away in the background, but when you get that V10 into the upper third of the rev range, the sound is unlike anything else I've ever heard. It's really quite special IMHO. Surprised to see this S6 featured on PistonHeads. I was the previous owner! Had it for 2 years and loved every minute. Only sold because of our growing brood. Fabulous car. Running costs? Who cares! It made me smile. The noise of that V10 and the Milltek. Perhaps I can fit 3 kids across the back seat.......

I disagree, if you speak to any Audi independant worth their salt you will find universally they recommend a relatively trouble free 6 or 8cyl over a four especially diesel variants.
I wouldn't touch a diesel as they are too stressed and overly complicated. I have the 4.2 V8 version before this one.
It really is a great daily drive. It takes the kids and dogs in comfort, and will make swift safe progress in any weather. All while burbling out a great sound track. I really can't think of many cars that can do it better!
It is most definitely not a "fun" car though. With it's auto box and 1800kg bulk, it's not surprising that it's more of a point and squirt sledgehammer. Great daily on A roads and motorways, but for a B road blast at the weekend I'll take my RWD, manual e36 every time.

Ehh, I dunno... big engine mounted well forward in a FWD-based 4WD estate with indifferent handling and a torque converter auto... not convinced to be honest... if I wanted a V10 estate, I'd rather have an E61 M5. I reckon the SMG would suit the V10's character far better than an automatic. In the world of fast Audis, a C5 S6/RS6 Avant with the 4.2 V8 appeals far more as a day-to-day all-weather proposition... but then I'd probably end up looking at the ruinous running costs and thinking it still wasn't really special enough and end up in an L322 Range Rover or X350 Jag XJ (4.2 S/C either way) or something like a Merc S500...
I like these cars, and I like E55 estates, but I just can't see them attaining a valued classic status, like the original RS2, for example, so will forever be doomed to just-an-old-car status.
I guess they were bought new by chaps in black polo necks with goatees, and moved on to subsequent owners, some of whom are genuine enthusiasts, and many of whom will throw thousands at fixing the myriad of hi-tech faults before eventually ending up being killed to death in a shopping centre car park by some greasy pimp.
Anyway, still a fine car for your ski chalet.
