SKY Q any good?
Discussion
Has anyone here got the Sky Q silver box passing through an AV amp to the TV? I have a Yamaha Aventage which is HDCP 2.2 compatible but if I switch between the TV (Samsung) apps such as Netflix I then get an error in Sky Q saying that UHD content cannot be played. It resolves itself when I turn off the box and back on again but it's a nuisance and Sky say they don't know what the issue is. They are sending an engineer in case it's the box or dish but I have a feeling it's something to do with the setup. The ARC HDMI slot on the Samsung TV is apparently not HDCP 2.2 so I am using the "MHL" HDMI3 input to take the cable from the amp and then using an optical cable to send the sound from the TV to the amp.
Anyone any bright ideas that would be great! Also, the Anynet+ on the Samsung seems not to work with the Yamaha at all well so have disabled all of that.
Hope that makes some sense to someone...

I've just ordered Sky Q for our new property after 10 years with Virgin (they don't service the new house).
A friend works for Sky so wangled one of her discount codes:
Sky Q 2TB + Mini Box (inc. Boxsets, so basically all channels (I understand) bar Sports and movies)
Sky Unlimited Fibre BB
Sky Talk Anytime Extra
£49 install/setup fee
£39.40 p/mth for 12mths
Quite happy with that!

Not to rain on your parade but I pay £37 for a 2TB box and a mini, sports and movies, not on a staff deal. Push them more!A friend works for Sky so wangled one of her discount codes:

Literally just had Sky Q installed this evening. Seems good so far.
Main thing I'm missing from when I had sky a year or so ago is the favourites option.
Remote seems quite intuitive, although the menus could be simpler and it'd be nice if when pressing the menu it took you straight to the tv guide!
I also got in on the £12pm friends and family staff discount.

I had Sky Q installed yesterday and was very impressed with the way the technician handled it. Changed my dish without question and went through the rest of it very efficiently.
One snag, I am operating TP Link adapters for ethernet through the house and Sky Q doesn't work with it yet so I am running everything through the wifi now. This would have been a problem as our tv is quite a way from the BT Hub and although the TP Link at the tv location provides wifi repeater as well it is far enough away to be a little unreliable. No problem says the tech, will install as many wifi boosters as you need to put it right, only needed one in the end and all seems to be performing well.
Apparently Sky are due to be releasing a software fix for this in December but have been generally unhappy about doing it because it opens up so many avenues to other potential problem areas.
I guess I won't know just how satisfied I am until I see the Spurs game today, here's hoping....

Sky won't normally use your ethernet connection when they do the install, they'll go to great lengths to avoid it.
However, connecting the Q box and the minis via ethernet (via your own powerline adaptors if necessary) is definitely the way to get a stable fast connection.
You should also bear in mind that adding a booster to the WiFi network halves the throughput of that network. Just plug them in* and get rid of the booster...
You can turn off the WiFi in the actual boxes if you don't want it - but that needs the installer menu.
Have a browse over in the Sky section of AV Forums and you'll see much discussion on using your own proper ethernet.
(Edited to add: and go into network settings and choose a wired connection)

Thanks for this, I switched it over to the wired connection but couldn't get it to work. I have seen elsewhere that you need to go to the installer menu to activate powerline but I can't get in using Home 001 Select?
All back to wifi for now and had to reactivate the Mini which was a bit of a pain.

Press home, highlight settings (but don't select it) then press 0-0-1 select
Thanks, that works. Will give it another try between GP and Man City game. I returned to Sky (Q) from Virgin
Plus 2 mini boxes .
The mini boxes kept doing weird things, totally unreliable in average sized house. So a few calls to help desk ,wasted more of my life. Service engineer rolled up a week or so later & fitted booster .
Since then getting weekly issues. EG go to bed & turn in TV. Another random problem such as no menu/ poor signal. Up & down stairs resetting stuff on a weekly basis.
Latest software.
It's ok but cannot be relied on ... Perhaps should hard wire the mini boxes.
The main box is fine, apart from poor menu structure which will hopefully be fixed in later release.
