I wonder how many other countries with plastic notes use the same, they have had them in the IOM for yonks and Australia, I am sure there are many more.
A veggie friend of mine first brought the Change petition to my attention and was very vocal about it until I point out that he lives in NZ and they've had notes make out of the same material since 1999.EDIT - seems De La Rue have retracted that claim & the BBC story has been updated - apparently Scottish notes are 0.003% animal product.

The petition is nonsense.
1. Ensure that goods purchased equal a value where the money you tender cannot result in being given a £5 note in change.
2. Use a debit card to pay for goods where a £5 note may be given in change.
3. Explain to the sales person / cashier/ assistant that you cannot accept £5 notes on religious / moral / nut job grounds and get some coins instead.

We demand that you cease to use animal products in the production of currency that we have to use.
They don't have to use £5 notes at all. There are several options open to them.1.

Worth pointing out here that when purchasing something you have no right to insist on change - you are actually required to tender the correct amount. If you cannot then you are in breach of contract.1. Ensure that goods purchased equal a value where the money you tender cannot result in being given a £5 note in change.
2. Use a debit card to pay for goods where a £5 note may be given in change.

That being the case, anyone who has an objection to the new notes has no obligation to use them if they do not want to. Just tender the correct amount in whatever denomination you feel comfortable handing and you will have no problems.

Lets see now, its nearly the end of the week, shall I start a petition on something which is really important......
This issue is an affliction bourne out of modern society where a significant number of people dont know how fking lucky they are. They want to try living in certain parts of the middle east right now then they might have something to grumble about. How many million around the world would dearly love for the most important thing they need to be worrying about is what the banknote in their pocket is made out of.

The most efficient and cost effective means of producing plastic fivers is by using Tallow (if it weren't then they would use something else) and to insist that it is changed to something less cost effective and efficient is a violation of my rights and freedoms.
They could make it a £6 note... catso said:

I hate them. They seem designed to come out of your pocket and fall on the floor everytime you put a hand in a pocket. The animal fat thing means most will have been chewed by a tramp at some point.
Great news.
Strangely, not once during my night out last did any of my new £5 notes jump out of my pocket.Great news.
Maybe yours are made from kangaroo extract?

I've said this elsewhere, but almost everything you come into contact on a daily basis has some form of animal product in it. Your car, your mobile phone, your Debit/Credit cards.
that'll be why I sometimes get a bit of crackling in my ear when I make a callCold said:

Well I can't go in there, obviously, as my shoes are made of dead cow, as is my jacket. Vipers said:

Does tattoo ink contain animal products then? I'm guessing cochineal, the red food colouring, or maybe the whole thing being suspended in some form of animal fat.
I thought the fivers thing was just using tallow as a lubricant? It's been used for that for centuries, and as a flux in soldering. I used to work in a factory where we lubricated the exposed bits of the butter packing machine...with butter. It's not as good a lubricant as the synthetic food grade lubes, but it's effectively free on site and you certainly have no issues about contamination of the packed product.
