Call a decent Transmission specialist.
In the Midlands I can recommend Ken at Trans Tech 01564 779407
I suspect it's repairable and that the worst case scenario would be less than 1/3 the price.
Can't see that happening. Car Mechanics magazine says VAG don't even have an exchange scheme, so where would parts come from?In the Midlands I can recommend Ken at Trans Tech 01564 779407

This guy doesn't seem to have problems. Claims they can get the Mechatronics as well: http://www.gearboxnottingham.co.uk/gearbox-dsg-rep...
If it was me, I would take it to a specialist. A main agent is only ever going to swap it out rather than waste time trying to diagnose and repair it.

He cannot work miracles - I have seen him turn a few cars away but for 99.5% of cars there are fixes available - and frequently the "gearbox problem" isn't the gearbox - it can be an ABS sensor, mismatched tyres a damaged wiring loom etc
If it makes you feel any better our Audi dealer quoted £15172 for cvt box.
It's probably worth speaking to a gearbox specialist as they will know more about the boxes than a main dealer. Oil level will be crucial and from my last conversation with a specialist there is apparently a software and wire loom update that can sort some issues.
Is the a6 Quattro a dsg box is is it a conventional torque converter box ?

Is it a ZF box? if so give Mackies in Glasgow a call, they are the only "A" rated ZF agent in the UK, they are highly thought of on many Audi forums. I know they have rebuilt boxes for a fraction of the Audi price and they give a very comprehensive high mileage warranty as well. And for anybody else thinking of getting a Gearbox service done by Audi..simply don't..find a good transmission specialist, Audi spanner monkeys are never going to be able to do it properly

ETA just noticed another poster said the same above, thread TLDR properly..sorry.. but even if it's not a ZF box give them a call, highly respected experts in Transmissions

Just to add my 10pence worth. ANY main dealer is NOT going to have a transmission specialist employed at their site. They WILL have someone that has been on a 1 week course who MAY come across the odd transmission problem, probably twice a year.
They will almost always want to take the line of least resistance by recommending a new transmission. The dealers on site "specialist" will not have the experience of taking transmissions apart - day in, day out, as a transmission specialist WILL have.
A specialist that does NOTHING else but repairing transmissions WILL have the necessary expertise when it come to diagnosing a fault and putting it right. Your main franchised dealer will NEVER have this expertise. Changing the gearbox absolves them from having a repaired gearbox go wrong AFTER the event.
It will also be the most expensive course, but that isn't the dealers problem. And they know it.

Dealers will replace the whole box for £10k rather than repair and replace. Find someone on FedAuto: http://www.fedauto.co.uk/memfind.html It's a shame that fedauto has lost a lot of members over the years. I can wholly recommend King Automatics in Epsom who fixed my Dads Merc for £1,300 rather than the £5k Merc wanted. The only disadvantage of really good autobox specialists is that they can have huge waiting lists.
Same box as fitted to the B8 S4 as others have mentioned, if you read through the B8 S4 thread in the Audi section here or have a look on the various Audi forums you'll find quite a few mentions of these gearboxes having issues at least until they revised the design which for the S4 that was ~2012 when the facelift came out. Most are mechatronics failures and/or clutch pack wear issues, they can be repaired by some gearbox specialists (there was one in Reading I found when I was being paranoid about my 2012 S4) but Audi dealers will seemingly only replace mechatronics units or replace the entire box. Good luck getting it sorted.
9 and 15 grand for gearboxes, has the world gone mental ?
The whole car only costs like what 40 something, I know they arent a charity but that is ripping the arse out of it big time, think I would have to find a s/h one and get busy with the spanner, based on the assumption that if I paid £1500 for a box that lease me a hell of a lot for tools and my time, have had engines and boxes out before, suspect it would be quite a job but I just couldnt pay that much for a bloody gearbox.
Whats a 2012 A6 worth anyway, 18 grand ?
