Are z4 20i safe for a pop and bang map
Discussion
Hey guys I'm new to this so go easy haha. I'm buying a bmw 63 plate z4 sdrive 20i and I want to get it remapped. I've been told their safe for 260bhp but tbh I'd feel better if I got it mapped to 240 just to be safe. Also I want a pop and bang map installed. But my mapping place has told me that these engine their is a risk of blowing the valves out and he would recommend it for my car. What's your guys thoughts ? See I thought this engine was the same as the new mini cooper s engine. And they pop for fun standard. So what's the truth behind this ??
OMG - so let me get this right it's going to put extra fuel in, to get unburnt fuel out, so it can go pop in the exhaust.
Apart from it being completely irritating after a while (10-15 seconds for me), I'm fairly sure it's not doing the cat any good..
But hey it's your car and if it's what you want to do...
I'd much rather spend the money on something useful - put it towards a new exhaust or an induction kit - or even some driver training..

Just to let yous know. I will be getting a custom exhaust on the car. For this map I'd have to run decats or very top end sports cats for it to handle the pops. But anyway I'm not sure if I will get the pop and bang added. But have any of yous had experience with mapping this engine ?

They said their normal map for this engine is 258 on a totaly stock car so I was saying 240 to keep it under stressed?
Or don't abuse it if you are worried about breaking it? The pops & bangs map seems like a load of **** , just where are you planning on utilising such a feature??

OK I se your points so it's probably not a good idea to get a pop and bang map. I just thought it would be good fun for when I go down my local car meet and car shows. The reason why I was saying 240 bhp is because ac shnitcher ( possibly the biggest bmw tuner. Maybe of exception of dinnan) they map this car to 245 and give you a compleat warranty to back any faults up. But it costs 2500 pound so I thought it would be a good idea to ask my local tuner to map my car to the same or close to the same specs as ac shnitchers map
Chipping/remapping turbo engine is relatively straightforward and big gains are not hard to get (I'm not recommending any tuner in specific, but Superchips remap is an 80bhp & 55lbft gain for about £400; CelticTuning offer 30/60/100bhp upgrades with similar increases in torque; Evolve offer 75-85bhp for £600).
I also understand that you're going to save a stload of cash by going to a different tuner, but are they also going to offer the same warranty as ACS in case the added torque/power from your remap causes your engine/gearbox/clutch/flywheel problems?
Make sure it's a reputable tuner and ask them what their warranty covers - although most will say it only covers damage that you can prove was caused directly by the remap.
Don't forget the extra cost of your insurance too, as anything over about a 10% increase comes with a heavy premium increase (and don't forget to tell them about the exhaust, cats, intake, etc. that you'll also have added).
