My Mk4 Golf 'Diesel Machine' died on me recently with a snapped cam belt. Quite annoying considering it was fully up to date on maintenance and the belt was only 40-odd thousand miles old. The engine was scrap so it was definitely time for a change. Enter the Mk5 Golf GTI biggrin I've wanted one of these for a long time, and now was the time to buy one. Naturally I found the cheapest one I could that was reasonably close to where I live and bought it after a brief look around and short test drive. Didn't view or drive any others, I saw this one and knew I'd want it as soon as I'd been to make sure it wasn't completely ruined!

Here it is, in the space made by the now sold (for spares/repairs) Mk4 Golf. I love black GTi's, it had to be a Mk5 and not a newer version as they quite clearly look the best, it had the 18" Monza wheels and the tartan seats too. Perfect:

I thought I got it reasonably cheap considering it's got no major mechanical problems, just cosmetic stuff to sort which you can expect on a fourteen year old car. It's only had two previous owners and has full and up-to-date service book too. "Ah yes", you're asking yourself, "But, what's the catch?" Well... I'll just leave this picture here:

Yep, one hundred and fifty two thousand miles biggrin I'm only going to put more miles on it driving to work and generally using it; work is a ninety six mile round trip, so high miles don't really matter to me. General condition does though, so I shouldn't have bought this car rofl Well, it's only cosmetics; the mechanicals have been given a reasonable level of servicing through its life and I'm fairly happy with that.

I gave it a quick wash as it was really dusty. The paint is original it seems, but long overdue some love. It's rough to the touch so I'll need to clay bar and machine polish it to make it look a bit more respectable. The headlights had suffered from UV damage too, and there was evidence someone had polished them before:

They're a bit past-it really, but a quick machine polish had them looking much better. I think I'll have to replace the lenses to get them looking like new again:

Next up was a full service as it was almost exactly a year ago the last one was done. The oil was pretty black and the last owner mainly did very short journeys. As it's a new car to me I opted to change all the filters just so I knew it was all fresh, as well as the spark plugs:

After that came a good vacuum of the interior. Under the rear seat was DISGUSTING. Rotten food, sticky old sweets, spilt fizzy drink, letters from debtors, parking fines, mould.... You name it and it was under there! I vacuumed out most of the debris but the seats and the actual floor pan need a proper deep clean. That'll get tackled next weekend when a friend comes over who is really in to detailing. I've helped him out with the mechanicals on his car so he's doing me a favour with the interior of mine smile

That was AFTER some cleaning...

More updates coming soon, enjoy!

Awesome I’ve been awaiting this thread patiently. It looks a good solid car that

Interior is gross, mine was no better either

I bought Depo projectors for mine, as my headlights were in a similar state to yours. The bonus is they look exactly the same as xenons but plug in without any modifications.

If there’s no record of it being done get the cam follower changed.

And no question drop the sump and clean out the pick up! Also worth doing the DV and PCV. Cheap enough but only go OE.

Lovely car. And it is definitely the best modern shape.

Heh, sorry dude, I've been a bit busy and had to fit this in between doing a million and one other things. Btw I realised I read your last email and promptly forgot to reply! Hopefully my thread updates answer your questions biggrin
I'm a fan of OEM, so I'll either have to get new headlights or I believe there are lens kits you can buy but it's a bit fiddly to get them swapped over as they're bonded on rather than clipped.

You mean for the high pressure fuel pump? Nope, no record of it being done so it's on the list thumbup

The diverter valve and PCV valve have already been done with receipts too smile

Thanks!

Yes, dropping the sump and checking the pickup pipe is on the list too. Will I need any parts when doing this like sump gasket or an oil pick up pipe gasket, or is it a sealant job with a small bead of instant gasket?

Great cars! Good luck with it.

Those aren't the original wheels are they? The 18 inch Monzas were diamond cut?

Wow, that crap under the seats AFTER a clean is horrendous. Also always surprises me how well takeaway kfc/mcdonalds etc chips look after years hidden away? Makes you think right 😂

Looks a decent car though and you’ve clearly got the skills to give it some tlc. Can see good ones of these starting to creep up over the next 10 years given what they did to reinvigorate the gti and golf in general.

If I remember correctly it’s sealant. Dirko I think. I just soaked the pick up in petrol. No question it will be partially blocked.

Looks good. Impressive if it’s on the original front wings given how many crusty ones are out there.

Mileage will be fine if it’s been looked after. My mate bought a 125i with 152k on the clock and h3s out 30k on it without any major dramas other than the usual BMw oil leaks.

That interning is hanging. I desperate to take the seats out my other half’s 125i to clean it properly. Given the skank I found when I removed the air vents yesterday, it’ll be grim but hopefully not that grim!

Cheers! Yes they're the original wheels but they've been refurbished and powder coated all over. I actually prefer the finish for daily driving because diamond cut wheels are a nightmare to look after and they only last five minutes before looking rubbish again. Especially on such a big face that these wheels have. These need refurbishing again now, the PO managed to kerb three out of four...

Thanks. Yeah, I got rid of all the loose stuff under the seats after I took that pic, but the 'gunk' around the seatbelt anchor points is still there. It all needs unbolting and deep cleaning, which will be done next weekend smile

I could see them going up in value too, they look and drive great. I immediately felt like it was a modern MK2 when I drove it for the first time. Takes me back to happy times over a decade ago driving Mk2's biggrin I did have a 16v MK2 recently but sold it on as for some reason I didn't use it much. It was supposed to become a daily driver but I put a load of work in to making it good again and sold it!

Nice one. I'll do the homework and post an update on here about it when I get around to doing the job.

Thanks. Yeah I think it's all original as the paint is too good under all the scratches and swirls, and it's very uniform around the whole car. Of course it could have had some paintwork but just been done very well. How likely is that though? laugh There is some rust on the front wings and other areas of the car but it'll all get sorted out in time.

biggrin I really want to crack 200k miles in this one, after the failure of the Diesel Machine at the 185k mark.

Gross, isn't it! I think there was a bit of a smell from back there too that might be a bit better now. Roll on next weekend for some proper cleaning!

Time for a bit of an update, bringing us right up to today smile Less words, more pictures, because we all like shiny pictures of cars.

Firstly, the car was absolutely desperate for a good session with the clay bar. The paint was really rough to the touch and came out like this or worse for every half a panel I clayed:

After a thorough claying, the paint actually looked brighter, although just as scratched as I'd not done any correction yet:

Next up, that disgusting interior! I started with just the centre console as it was rank:

The only way to clean it properly was to remove it completely:

Everything cleaned, including the carpet below which somehow managed to be disgusting too, and the shiny console going back in:

Now time for a bit of paint correction. I did a 50/50 on the bonnet to make it look like I know what I'm doing. In reality: I am not a detailer laugh

Mmm, scratchy:

I'm totally a professional at this:

Yay, an obvious line between more scratched and less scratched biggrin

While this was happening, a friend with a very good wet vac was cleaning my seats. Here's the extremely clean rear bench seat:

And this is the water after cleaning JUST the rear bench above yikes

We had a go at restoring the original grille too, as I didn't want to put a cheap Ebay one that came with the car on there. Another 50/50 shot, because I'm such a detailing tart now:

Moving on to correcting the rest of the car. This took a while to do, and it looked brilliant in these pics, but the reality is that the lacquer is still a bit marked, although much improved. I also left buffer trails everywhere because I only have an old rotary polisher and I was getting a bit tired! I need a decent DA with some different size heads really if I want to do it properly. I'll probably invest in one soon as I do like a shiny car smile

That brings us bang up to date. I had a little bit of free time this morning so decided to have a look at the cam follower for the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP). It only takes ten minutes to remove, and luckily for me someone's been here before and replaced it or this is original and not worn out:

HPFP removed and you can see where the follower sits:

No damage to the HPFP itself either. Happy days.

I installed my new follower as I already had everything apart and put the car back together. Now to sort out a few more bits and pieces... More updates coming soon.

Looks great, good to see this generation of GTI get some mechanical love. The Mk5 and Mk7 are my favourites.

The tartan seats seem to be rare - all the ones near me have the leather seats.

Brilliant! My phone really struggled opening so many pics!

I feel a second hand car is never your own until you fully decontaminate it. I had to remove all seats and the centre console as well on my last S3.

One thing I really like to do on these age iv VW is got a OE short shift linkage off a S3/TTS, and change the gearbox cable ends. However before doing so filling the voids with silicone. It really tightens up the gear change.

Saying that, I bet yours is DSG!
