Succeeded in terms of getting much deeper in tournaments than probably the last 50 years. But yes, when it comes to the crunch, being an ordinary manager the quality of the players only gets you so far, you need the manager and the players all performing at a high level. Southgate unfortunately has no way to change the course of a game himself, he literally picks the team and sits and watches, he looks often bemused and confused on the touchline when things dont go to plan and any there is no plan B.
