Check out Jet Lag: The Game on YouTube:

The guy behind Wendover Productions and two of his staff/friends have done several races competing against each other. It's just them filming themselves, no camera crews and they use their Wendover logistics knowledge to plan their their moves. Each series has a different objective: Connect4 US States, Tag EUR It, Capture the Flag in Japan etc. They also mix it up with challenges to earn more budget/travel which adds another layer of strategy beyond a simple race.
Just wanted to say thank you for the recommendation. I lost a couple of hours to this yesterday. The main guy (blondie) can be a bit hard to understand - he is the fastest talker I have ever heard! - but it's very watchable. The circumnavigation series was great. Race around the world vs Taskmaster. https://youtube.com/@jetlagthegame

The two young lads conceding the best part of a 24hr lead was impressive, they could have been out of sight. The mother and daughter seemed to be the only ones who recognised they had the budget to use Taxis and did it. From memory minus the brother and sister they all had ~20% of their budget with two legs left. None of them really seemed to be factoring that in, while the husband of the older couple is overly tight. They opted to stay in a hotel for the night when getting a taxi and keeping moving would have been a better option.
I like the brother and sister but realistically with their remaining budget they're really going to struggle.

Good episode, it was a stark change from one side of the ferry to the other in terms of population and surroundings.
Mum & daughter played a blinder to catch up, they've managed their budget well but in a race to the finish mum is never going to run is she... and the spoiler for the next episode makes it look like that is exactly what will happen.

Sums up my ex with our kids, 18 to 24.
Thinking about when the leading teams sometimes end up leaving the hotel at 4am in the morning and end up on the same transport as the later teams.
Why not time your arrival so you know that you'll leave when everything is open.
Might sod up the hold yer breath ending of each leg though
I'd be, right! we can see the hotel, so let's hole up in this cheap bar for a few hours.
Do they know what time they will be told to leave? How long they get in each stop ? Thinking about when the leading teams sometimes end up leaving the hotel at 4am in the morning and end up on the same transport as the later teams.

Doesn't they have to leave.
TAR they get 12 hours and over the years a few teams have simply slept in

It was great to see something so different. I can't see us adding Sumatra to our destination wish-list though!
Don’t let the program misrepresent the real situation, travel by road can be slow going and a bit sketchy; if you have the budget, it’s much like anywhere else, can be done in comfort.Medan, in the North of Sumatra, is an enjoyable city, with some decent hotels and nice restaurants, easy to access by air. Lake Toba (Danu Toba), is also both the largest lake in Indonesia and the biggest volcanic lake in the world, quite spectacular; a six hour taxi ride from Medan.
Medan
Lake Toba, I went for a couple of days, stayed a week.

Eugenie and Isobel knowingly stealing the taxi was poor show. Unsporting. I want them to finish last now.
My wife said so, I told her I’d do exactly the same Glad they’ve caught up though so there’s some competition for the final leg. They both seemed to be getting on so much better too.
I love the siblings and hope my two are like them when they’re older. The brother breaking down and asking for a hug from the crew.
The older couple need to go all out now, taxi across the whole of the last route and maybe they’ll catch up.

Totally agree with the brother talking to camera and just coming out with "can someone give me a hug please?" Was lovely.
I'm really struggling to like the old chap. His wife is putting up with a lot, I feel.
i hope he loses as not likeable at all i hope either siblings or 2 friends winI'm really struggling to like the old chap. His wife is putting up with a lot, I feel.
Found that a very interesting episode. Very moving by the brother asking for a hug after his sister's admission. I can't warm to the old guy at all. They still have plenty of funds but he still insists on penny pinching. The mother and daughter I just find very annoying. The two best friends I feel are in the best position to win and if James and Betty don't win then I would like to to see them win but I find Alfie marginally less annoying than the old guy.
Alfie clearly has the 'tism'. His mate is almost like his carer. I do like them though. They are the only ones doing the smart thing of overnight buses. They get to where they need to be, can sleep (a bit) and have no hotel costs. The others haven't worked that out yet. Instead they are wasting money on taxis.
I did think it funny when the know all mother thought she'd booked an expensive exclusive cab, only to find she was sharing it with a load of other random.

I’m pretty sure that the mother/daughter combo nailed the over night buses this leg with helped pull them up to the boys (with the help of taxis to make connnections) I did think it funny when the know all mother thought she'd booked an expensive exclusive cab, only to find she was sharing it with a load of other random.
The boys got overnight buses but didn’t actually travel as far in the time as it was criss-crossing the country. I thought the coast would have been better but clearly not.
There is no doubt Alfie and Owen are going about it the right way, Alfie is a bit odd, but not as much as some are making out; he certainly recognizes his own short comings.
Eugine and Isabel, burned through money at the beginning, but certainly seemed to have leant from that and now seem good at conserving what they have, on this leg they seem to have been a bit nicer to each other, although I doubt much has changed.
Stephen and Viv, I was giving him the benefit of the doubt, because he seemed to be enjoying it and the pair are pushing them selves, being a similar age I know that kind of travel can be difficult; clearly the taxi driver didn’t now English, so the old coot just shouts louder FFS. His tight fisted might be their savoir or undoing, it will have been down to him.
James and Betty, that was a bit of a tug, they really come across as two really decent people; either them or the best friends for a win would be a good outcome.
IMO, the presenter is really over egging, the not many Westerners visit the region. The spoilers are very misleading, so I wouldn’t judge anything from them.

Really enjoyed watching all 4 series of this.
What’s great about the latest series is there is no lengthy intro explaining the format at the start of every episode - so much better.
Yes we want either the 2 lads or brother & sister to win.
The old guy is highly annoying- zero respect for different cultures
