My brothers property tax is “only” $10k / year…. Gulp.
If it wasn’t for stupid property taxes, I’d live in 60174 too. Love it there.

We are still considering moving there, I like the town. My flat in Chicago is over $14k a year in "council" tax (+$900 a month in HOA fees) so on that front is broadly similar. However utilities and the regular roof replacement and maintenance costs are a different matter : )

I'm in my early 30's and the main goal for me is to try and get a house in a quiet area. My wife is autistic and I don't think I can share a wall with anyone ever again due to her noise sensitivity. Houses are too expensive in London so we are priced out. We need to find somewhere that's commutable for our jobs but we feel a bit lost and frustrated at property prices.

No plans for kids I just want a double garage for some project cars and maybe a dog.

Move somewhere where properties are sensibly priced, forget commuting to London and find a jobs that pay less, the reality is you will probably be no worse off day to day. It's always difficult to give up a big wage, but if you are paying 40% tax and what ever NI is these days, on the money it takes to fund a massive mortgage it doesn't make much sense in my book. Not to mention season tickets into town and that adds up to lot of money you need to earn to keep afloat. The only issue is you may be moving away from family and friends.

Goals (sorry, not doing short, medium and long as that would turn this post into an essay)

Business: grow my business while experimenting with less effort/activity as I want to be able to run this business even though I've "retired" using technology rather than humans.

Personal: move in with lass, but I'm slow in these kinds of matters.

Cars: replace the 911 Turbo with something else, but I'm slow in these kinds of matters.

Health: maintain fitness so I can enjoy life properly well into my old age, to avoid being slow in these kinds of matters.

Only goal is to ensure the kids grow up happy and well rounded and to travel and see the world. Don't really aspire to anything else, got enough money to not have to work ever again although I still am as I enjoy it.

Looking after my health and those around me is priority one I guess.

I was in the same boat at your age all I'll say is - fk me older kids are expensive.

I will second that. My eldest is 17 in August, the insurance quotes for when she passes her test are between £2k and £3K.

That's before I have bought a car, new iPhone every two years (they get "glitchy" apparently") school trips, train fare, lunch, pocket money, contact lenses, clothes, tutors the list is never ending.

I think if I had never had children I would be seriously able to retire now at 50.

the 5 year old is already expensive enough... dancing, gymnastics, swimming, piano lessons, school stuff... still too young to appreciate it all. But you have kids, you know what to expect.

We put ours though private school so I was expecting a lovely change when they hit 18.
How wrong was I.

You could of course just let them make their own way, but as evidenced on this thread, many of us have a goal to see them settled and happy.

More realistic properties are available in 60174.
I love it there, and I know my employer would sponsor my green card, but Luxembourg is home.

Whilst sat in a very boring webinar the other day I realised that I really don't have any professional ambition whatsoever. I enjoy my job and want to do well but only because of the lifestyle that brings outside of work.

I'm 29, I've got a house, two kids and a dog in a beautiful part of the country. I live in the town where I work so I can drop the kids to school every day then walk to work. Personally I suppose a goal would be to get married (probably more her goal than mine!) and to buy a house with a slightly bigger garden but really I am really happy with everything at the moment.

I'm an accountant and a month or so ago I had a meeting with a client whose household income is probably 4x mine. They were discussing where they spend their money and what they do in their personal lives and it really didn't sound any different to what I do, the extra money goes on shinier cars and a bigger house but the actual day to day sounds more or less the same and it made me realise that chasing the next £ is less important than I used to think. I suspect that helped to kill any professional ambition in one go!

I Worked like a dog last 10 years to get where i am and build good foundation,
Health is amazing and now able to take a moment and look around so to speak

Continue working,and enjoy life.
Im pretty good at what i do so stress and pressure is not like to used to be.
