Love that. Stick the 280 wheels on and lower it about 15mm and it would be bang on.

Dad went through a series of new Capris, starting with a red Mk2 1.6S followed by a blue Mk3 2.0S. A brief Granada period followed, then one of the first 2.8is - 4-speed in light metallic green. By god that was felt quick car to a 12-year-old me as he was happy to demonstrate up to an indicated 130mph once. And it looked so good. Happy days…

the obvious Q is what is the 'spiritual equivalent' of the 3.0S today?
I miss my 3.0S and often think about this and there is only one obvious candidate with the required ingredients and similarities.

3 litre

6 cylinder

3 door hatch

Similar proportions

Practical 4 seater

Rear wheel drive

Manual or auto

Dual exhaust

Sounds nice

Quite fast

Entertaining handling

Reasonable buying and running costs

Easily modified/upgraded/ruined

Maybe a future classic

For me it has to be the BMW 135/140i

Great looking cars, I'd imagine this is an absolute blast to drive and own.

Hmm, maybe, I had an M135i and that could certainly do the undignified lurching and sliding a Capri could, imagine the carnage if stuff like the M140i etc didnt have any stability/traction control like now with well over double the power of the most powerful Capris ? plus tuning options that take them to 450 with just a remap and 500 and way more with other stuff added. No putting a Pecio Exhaust, K and N filter and trying to determine whether its made the blindest bit of difference, bloke with a laptop and £400 (possibly less) and you gain a full Capri 1.6's worth of bhp, maybe even a 2.0S worth.

I always think the Capri driver taken from 1977 and put in some North Face gear, told not to be too sexist etc and get a car would perhaps err on the side of an Audi A5 as the nearest spiritual successor. Audis were rare and oddball then, then were in the eighties and nineties posh, cooler sort of German Volvos but now they are as common/ubiquitous/accessible to a working man as Fords were back then.

As a long-time RWD BMW owner I'd say any Audi was a POS!

I've had a Rover P6B 3500S, MK2 Granada Ghia, Mk2 Escort RS2000, two Capri 2.8is, a 2.8i Scorpio, Mercedes 190e, C280e Sport, and 8 RWD Bmws.

A mate lent me a Scirocco years ago that didn't have any brakes. laugh

Wow I'm liking this lots at 62 years of age I loved my Capris.
My first a MK1 2.0 GT then a MK2 3.0S followed by a 2.8i 4 speed and loved them all.
Would have been a Good Pension Pot today.
