Slow isnt't it?

Not as sarcastic as you may think. I have recently tried to reduce my fuel consumption in my daily driver in an attempt to reduce some costs.

70mph on the motorway is only just faster than most lorries ( I swear most of them are going faster than 56mph) and WAY below the speed of the average traffic on there. I think I would even go as far to say that it is HARDER to drive at the legal limit, (due to having to pull out into fast 85,90.95mph+ traffic to overtake the lorries.

Anyone else tried this and noticed the same thing??

Cheers,

Steve.

I've started doing it about 2 years ago. Im used to it now and find no problem with it really.

The key thing to do is compare the time difference it makes to your journey. Very Little in my case and I do 37 miles each way!

I feel much better for it as well.

Did 60-65 following an in-law yesterday for around 8 miles and it is surprising just how much slower you are going than the majority of other road users. You are right regarding trucks we had a fair number (5 or 6) overtake us.

They are usually foreigners without the same restrictions.

Absoulutley. Had to drive the worst transit van in the world today for 5 hours on M40 /42. Was overtaken by artics, coaches and all even though it did 75 flat out.
Was still not the slowest vehicle on the road however. Overtook many cars, dont these peeps have a life to get on with.

Was that 60 on a gps? 60 on your speedo could easily be as low as 54mph true speed. The trucks will be doing 56mph true speed.

ironically 70mph makes zero difference to my car. So I go with the flow, not quite the fastest, but not the slowest. 90 seems ok at 2800rpm.

Yes! Easy when the motorway is failr quiet, but when starts to get a bit busy, then it's a pain in the ass to do it well and not get in people's way and not end up blocked in by faster traffic in the camel train.

Must admit on my 20 mile journey to work each morning i usually end up doing about 60MPH on the duel carrageway.

Mainly because of traffic density but mainly because I really dont want to get to work any quicker!!

Its quite relaxing and apart from it being trickier to overtake when everyone is doing 70 / 80 / 90+ but you just need to allow more time and signal early enough.

Down here in Devon people often let you out anyway.

I think I add about 4 minutes on to my total journey time from when I try to hoon it and arrive at work a lot more relaxed.

I know, you are right, my indicated (speedo)was around 65, thats why I said 60-65, so I think these trucks were over the limit.

You've hit it on the head there destroyer...

Very little difference in journey times for the difference in speeds between 70mph and 100mph on most journeys..

For those precious few minutes that you'll save and later waste in the toilet, you risk your licence, your job, your life (in certain situations)...

Really now worth it....you realise that as you get older and I'm younger than most of you lot on here...

hi - I have to say that the old view of 100 is no faster than 60 is a bit old hat. On a 100 mile trip, that would take 100 minutes at 60mph, I would expect to do that in 60 minutes at 100mph.... which is about when the tank empties.

Soooooooo. Maybe it applies to cages, but certainly doesn't to bikes. Unless you get nicked of course, which tends to add to the journey time.

I find that choosing the correct lane at roundabouts makes a huge difference when in car, speed a bit less so. But it does add up to a lot of minutes over a long journey. The maths is undeniable !
