Hey guys!

So last night i was out driving with a friend and noticed the traffic police infront of me going about 10-15mph in a 30. Obviously i caught up with them pretty quickly but made sure i kept my distance because the police up here seem to have some kind of power trip ( i live in Dundee ). Next minute the pulled in and as i went past they pulled right out behind me, at this point i turned down a little allyway to see if they would follow me and they did... Next minute the blues are on and before i know it they are giving me a big lecture about how people my age ( 20 ) die young from driving to fast and asked if i thought i was trying to be funny speeding behind them. I got out my car as one of the officers checked my tyres check my tyres and i was actually shocked to see one of them had worn pretty bad although still legal as the tool they used came back as 1.5.7 at one point, 1.8.2 at another and 1.2.9. It was at this point i started explaining that the tyre was going to be changed anyway and was booked in to a garage as i wanted winter tyres. This was fine with the officer and we started having a good chat about tyres etc. Next minute his college comes over, asks for the readings and then streight away comes out with '' Thats you getting 3 points and an £100 fine, not so big infront of your friend now are you''. It was at this point i slightly lost it with him and started going on about being stopped for no reason etc. Next minute im being shoved into the back of the police car and given a lecture about my attitude and the fact that if i had not kicked off he would have let me away with it, also that he is the law and he can pull over whoever he likes and thats hes going to pull me over everytime he sees me again etc...! Obviously i was going to be anoyed as it was pretty much on the the line for being illegal! He then turned to the other officer and said '' Lets just nick him'' and he begun writing the ticket. So after a nice big arguement and a hole load of abuse that actually there was no need for i was on my way again!

So here we are the next day and im just asking for some advice. Im going to have the tyre changed tomorrow but i was told that if an mot station would pass the tyre i could have a leg to stand on? i know im going to get abuse for being cheeky etc but i was really anoyed at them for giving me the points right away.

Cheers for the replies!

In summary, you were driving on illegal and dangerous tyres, were annoyed to be called to task by the police and behaved like a prat.

Try winding your neck in and behaving like a grown up. idea

What on earth is 1.5.7 supposed to mean?

Your numbers don't make sense, the legal minimum is 1.6 mm around the whole tyre. If the readings included 1.5 and 1.2 then the tyre was illegal.

Think he's got too many decimal points in there. 1.57 mm, 1.29mm etc.

I'd say your biggest problem was failing the attitude test. The correct answer is "Yes Sir, no Sir, three bags full" etc.

From memory the tyre must have at 1.6mm tread depth across 75% of the centre width of the surface. This means you have 12.5% of the tyre width on each shoulder that can be under, assuming that's where the wear is. On a 205mm tyre that would equate to allowing around 25mm of section below 1.6mm on each shoulder.

Go to a tyre shop and get them measured properly then either accept it or argue your case if it turns out to be legal.

So the minute the police car is behind you, you take a random turn down an alley, bound to draw their suspicions and rightly so.

To the OP

you're a fkwit of the highest order who needs to grow up

hth

reasons being

1 - illegal tyres
2 - trying to dodge a pull just elevates the level of suspicion
3 - 'kicking off' with the law - it just doesn't work as you have found out

Sounds like you deserve everything you got OP. Frankly I'm surprised officers might have overlooked an illegal tyre if you hadn't been a knob about it and kicked off at them for no reason.

But, if we are taking the OP at face value (and can do nothing else) one of the officers potentially had an attitude problem, which is unacceptable. There is no way that the Police can expect respect is they don't show it.

If this is the case then I would do the following:

1. get a written statement from an MOT centre to say that the tyre was legal (if it was illegal then you are looking at points)

2. make a formal complaint about the behaviour of the officer (I think that the cars are equpped with recording equipment)

They deserve respect because they are the f+cking police and are doing their job. Jesus wept. What a country we now live in. The police do not have to earn your respect, especially not when you are breaking the law, trying to hide it and then behaving like a child.

Ah grasshopper, the way of calm and smoothly flowing water always gets to its destination despite the hidden turbulence of the pebbled river bed.

Or, there is a time and place for the force Luke, chose wisely when to invoke it.hippy

The bit about the tyre shoulder is nonsense, it needs to be the centre 75% of the tread area, sipes on the sholder do not count as tread area.

the law is 1.6mm not 1.60mm, so an engineer would argue that 2 of the 3 measured points were at or above 1.6mm being 1.6mm 1.8mm and 1.3mm, and unless that 1.3mm measurement was the one in the centre, or very clearly within the centre 75% of the tread area, the tyre was at the limit rather than bellow it.

Unfortunately the courts hate engineers so you are inevitably getting the points

Thats a load of bks. Using that logic you would sy that the Gestapo deserved respect, or that the the Stasi deserved respect. Why do you think that there is all the grief in y=th eUS at the moment about the way the police have acted?

Just because someone wears a uniform they do not automatically get te right to be a dhead. Sadly many seem to think that they do.

Tyre sounds legal to me if the 1.8mm covered enough of the middle. Check the law, check the tyre depths and take appropriate action if the tyre is legal. Don't know how you would go about it though, get an mot station to sign something and then remove the tyre and keep it?
