Didn't Realise Specs Cameras On Separate Roads Are Linked!
Discussion
A workmate of mine told me this morning that a friend of his received a speeding ticket for exceeding the average speed between two cameras - the thing is these cameras are on two completely separate roads!
He was caught between a camera on the Southend bound A127 and a camera on the south bound A130. There are a few limit changes, traffic lights and two large junctions between these points which makes it even more surprising. My workmate says his friend was indeed toeing it and caught all the lights on green, but was still surprised to get a ticket (as would anyone I guess). Apparently it stated his average speed was in excess of what is permitted for someone travelling at the legal limit between those two points.

Can you get a copy of the NIP from him, remove his personal details and post it up here?He was caught between a camera on the Southend bound A127 and a camera on the south bound A130. That does seem very unusual. Your friend needs to re-drive the route noting the maximum permitted speeds over the distances involved and using an accurate odometer. That way the minimum time to complete that section can be calculated and compared with the time alleged to have been taken.
It seems odd that the average was exceeded with all those junctions and that the final camera was on a much more minor road off of the expected route for most drivers.
Maybe there was another set of Specs camera-clocks before the final one.
Let's see the NIP please.

the last road isn't minor as such, it's a heavily used single carriageway road, it's the main route on and off canvey island, the other one goes through benfleet itself where i live.It seems odd that the average was exceeded with all those junctions and that the final camera was on a much more minor road off of the expected route for most drivers.

knowing the roads concerned and the junctions involved, if the guy has been done, then he must have been caning it, some of those roads are nsl (70) and even in the mrs motor (hot hatch) i would struggle to average over 70 on parts.

Sorry, I can't get a copy of the NIP - I don't personally know the guy who got the ticket (to be fair, if I'd have just got a ticket, I wouldn't give a copy to someone I don't know to paste in the internet!). I have no reason to disbelieve my workmate though. He is a car nut too and was surprised as me that the guy got done.jesta1865 said:

I won't repeat the speeds I was told, but suffice to say it was considerably over the limit. Coupled with the fact that all the traffic lights he hit were green helped him on his way, and meant he didn't really have to slow down that much. And if you're in a hot hatch and can't manage to get over 70mph between those two points I think your car might be broken

OK, well as has been said already, the SPECS3 system is capable of being used in this way i.e. across a wide area and not just on the same stretch of road.Anecdotal evidence suggests that when the NSL applies (i.e. there isn't a variable or temporary speed limit in place) the automated systems such as SPECS and HADECS are configured to trigger at a pretty high threshold, so I would hazard a guess the guy averaged somewhere around 100mph to get that NIP.
As you say, easily possible between those two cameras if the conditions were good.
With SPECS3, ANY two cameras within a very wide area (20km+) can be the effective 'start' and 'end' points of the average speed calculation, so the more they spring up the more reports like this we'll start seeing.
Quick let's have another load of bks one.
A bloke down the road knows someone who had a friend whose brother was married to a girl whose Dad bought a dog off a fella who bumped into someone who read in a paper last year that someone once got a speeding fine and the French version of points put on his UK licence.
Here's the rub though. In France they take points off you and ban you when you get to zero, whereas ours add up. So this guy had 6 points on his UK licence but because he got caught in France they take three points off your licence for speeding, so he's now only got 3 points on his UK licence.
How good is that.

You're Jay from The Inbetweeners, aren't you? You'll be telling us about those twins you pulled who only wanted anal next, I bet.
Taking away Loon's comments above (he does post some good stuff as well you know) the issue here is down to folks regarding the A130 as a bit of a race track. The bit between the A127 and the A12 is VERY well know for having an almost permanent presence of unmarked police cars on it but the bit between the A127 and the Sadlers Farm roundabout has not received as much coverage so far, unless you include the police driver getting a dangerous driving conviction a little while ago
From my own experience you can get up to some alarming speeds very easily on the stretch of A130 towards the Canvey turn off and if you continue through the lovely right hand curve onto the A13 you can carry these speeds along a wide stretch of road for quite some distance. This would be a good place to put a few average speed cameras on IMHO.
However, to have this unmonitored stretch of dual carriageway between two completely separate groups of average speed cameras surely cannot lead to a conviction ?

I know someone who did this twice, clocking up a negative six points in his first few months of driving, and due to one-weird-DVLA-trick-they-don't-want-you-to-know-about, was made to simultaneously retake his test after his own death in the future AND before he had originally taken it in the past. Fortunately he was able to use his accidentally-awarded full motorcycle entitlement to do a sweet barrel roll out of the test centre on the stroke of midnight.trashbat said:
