2nd hand van problem
Discussion
I was after a bit of advice, I just bought a 2 nd hand 2009 Astra van with 120000 on the clock, after driving it down the road the engine management light came on , rung the dealer and was told they just changed the filter needs to bed in , so I say rubbish there's a problem with a sensor or something else so they say bring it in and they get mechanic to look at it.
If it's in for repair can I hire a van and claim it back of them as I need the van for work?

no you can't claim the hire back
You can claim...whether that claim would be honoured or not is another story though.I would ask them whether they would either give you another van or cover the hire costs of one if they don't have one available while yours is in for repair. Do this beforehand though.
If you have just bought a second hand Van from a dealer and the management light comes on as you are driving it from the dealers then you have to give them the opportunity to fix the problem and would doubt they would pay for a hire van.
Also bear in mind that the Van is 16 years old,has 120,000 miles on the clock and probably cost less than £500 you cannot expect it to run without a few issues in the future.

It's only 6 years old. I doubt it cost £500.Also bear in mind that the Van is 16 years old,has 120,000 miles on the clock and probably cost less than £500 you cannot expect it to run without a few issues in the future.

see what the dealer offers , give them the chance to put it right , but if its super critical to have a reliable van with a back up loan vehicle buy a new one on lease , you get what you pay for!! think how much they have made out of the sale , but its fair to expect a roadworthy and reasonably sound runner if it was sold as such....

Update , the van broke down today aa called and looks like head gasket problems
I spoke to dealer saying I want to reject it, he has said he has the right to sort it out with in a reasonable time before I can do this.
His mechanic has already had it once and not resolved it
Unfortunately that is correct, he does have the chance to put it right before you can reject it. I spoke to dealer saying I want to reject it, he has said he has the right to sort it out with in a reasonable time before I can do this.

I though within the first 30 days we could do this?

Actually, on checking there, the law has changed a couple of months ago under the Consumer rights act 2015They have had it once already and not sorted it
"The Consumer Rights Act introduces:
30 days to get a refund - For the first time a specific timeframe has been created in which you can reject a faulty item and get a full refund - now 30 days
Failed repairs - After one failed attempt by the retailer to repair or replace a faulty item, you're entitled to ask for a refund or price reduction.
A second repair or replacement - If you don't want a refund or price reduction, you have the right to request another repair or replacement at no cost to you."
So yes, now they have had a go (though they could argue this is a different problem to the first) you should be entitled to reject it.
