Noticed today a Nissan Leaf (I think) which was clamped for having no tax, I was under the impression that it was a zero rate vehicle and thus was exempt?

Still needs taxing though doesn't it?
My cars are band A (no cost tax) but I still have to log in to dvla once a year to tax them. I get an emailed receipt for £0.00!

So

Oh, didn't realise you need to even if it's zero pounds, the cars owners must of not either.

It's bit harsh clamping it then if it's simply an admin thing, will probably cost them quite a bit to release it.

At first I thought it may have been clamped for parking too close to the junction or ignoring a no parking sign for roadworks taking place.

Took a pic earlier in the day

Very randomly, it's declared SORN.

The .gov checker says that it's currently declared SORN. Considering the owner appears to have left it parked it on the road, and badly by the looks of it, that would explain why they've been ticketed for having no tax.

Edit - Just seen the reply above, so yep, that's why it's been ticketed.

I haven't looked it up but presumably it was SORN'd so it didn't have to be insured.

Tax @ £0 is to check for an MoT, which this car needs, and insurance, which all cars on the road need.

Fair not harsh.

Seems a tad pointless, so about right for the UK/DVLA.

Actually I was wondering what exactly you need to do as the Wife's car is a £0 tax and it's coming up to it's first renewal, I guess we'll receive the usual reminder from DVLA in the post as per a chargeable vehicle?

You will.

It's not really pointless though, as explained above; MoT & Insurance, on the road or SORN,

I thought they had stopped sending out reminders also?

May have got that wrong.

Not pointless as said.

London congestion charge however is, you have to apply to get a 100% discount rather than them just knowing if you drive in.

Its the same with all tax exempt classic cars over 40 years old.
It was always a pleasure to wander down to the local PO and collect a tax disc free of charge.

Tax at £0 is to check for an MoT? Can't an MoT be checked for otherwise?

Yes, but not at a glance like a tax disc, which also shows insurance is covered.
