Driving high on coke runs over teen
Discussion
I have some sympathy though, you wouldn't expect someone to be laying in the road, plus as any punishment wouldn't add to his current woes I can see a guilty plea as being a pragmatic option.
I note the victim was described as clever, I wouldn't say being so pissed you collapsed in a road as being that clever to be honest.

Depending on the speed and the lighting, it can be a split second decision as to whether you will do less damage by swerving - possibly mounting a kerb, hitting a barrier, going into oncoming traffic - or running over a large unknown object. The coke in his system probably didn't help that decision making process.

Seems to have been the junction of a 20 limit and a 30 limit, with plenty of streetlights.

Either he had plenty of chance to stop, or he was driving like a complete and utter bell-end.

If he was off his tits and on it that day, I think he'd have done a runner. He probably only had traces from a previous session.
She's dead because she lay in the road, not because he had a few lines the day before.
I agree. She's dead because she lay in the road, not because he had a few lines the day before.
People get emotive because it is a tragic case, and because drugs were detectable.
I suspect if I met the guy I'd think he was a tt as I've never met a cocaine-taker who isn't, but unless the drugs were at a level in his system to cause an effect, this is all just a tragic accident.
I reckon most people just want to believe that it couldn't happen to them.
Therefore after an accident with bad consequences they like to attribute it to things they persuade themselves they never do- such as being out of their heads on coke, or driving at 70 mph in an urban 30mph limit.
Whereas often the truth is more prosaic, and the accident is the result of things everyone does at least occasionally, and some people frequently, such as looking away for a moment due to a distraction outside the car, or looking down at the sat nav or on screen controls. Accepting this though shows that every time you drive there is a risk - it's not just the nutters who are involved in fatal accidents.
And of course journalists are happy to lie/exaggerate for dramatic effect, which plays into the same attitude.

If he was, he simply wasn't looking wtf he was going. 14 metres each second at 30mph. How far away can you see a person lying in a streetlit road?
Rarely do I see a person lying in the road but if I did I would be unlikely to think it was a person in the road........ I suspect that would be half the problem. It is a bit different when you see people walking by the road and you are expecting them to jump into the road and being aware...Jasandjules said:

So at the very outside, you'd see it and think "Oh, it's a 5ft+ long, very 3d, lump of something unidentified. No, no reason at all not to simply run over it. No damage could possibly result to my car."? <badump, crunch, badump, squish> "Oops."
No I would avoid it of course exactly as you say I would wonder if it was a bag (frankly if I saw a bag like that in the road I might think some as***le has put a dog in it so chances are I'd be stopping to check) of goodness knows what and avoid. But would the average driver notice? I mean, you see them just bounce over potholes etc which I swerve etc..
Whilst this chap does bear some responsibility, I get the feeling that jailing him is a poor substitute for tackling the real issue - the culture in the UK that an evening out is about getting as bladdered as possible, being sick, making a tit of yourself and then bragging about it to your mates the day after.

...she was apparently lying facing the traffic, not lengthways, so at a glance you'd see the outline of the head and shoulders. Much smaller than the 5' silhouette you mentioned.
About the size of a bag/holdall actually...
<double-checks> Nope, I didn't mention whether that 5ft+ was with the direction of traffic, perpendicular to it, or at some other angle.About the size of a bag/holdall actually...
A 5ft+ long bag is 5ft+ long whether you're looking at the side, the end, or an angle.
