Got an NIP for 85mph on the lightwater bypass last Sunday. However i remember the van and it was on the other side of the dual carrigeway and I was going away from it.

Can they do you when your travelling away from the van?

Barstewards.

Yes they can do you going away from the van. Don't know if you can contest the accuracy of their speed reading if any central reservation was close to the line of fire, ie obstructing/reflecting the beam from getting a true reading.

Only if you remember who was driving.

Bad luck Charlie. I have to say, I saw them there and enjoyed my car up to the redline in 1st and 2nd away from the roundabout then abruptly stopping my acceleration at 70.

It was a bit pointless them being there though. It was a clear dry day, good grip on the road. I'm certain it's more dangerous there when it's busy at rush hour. I think they just fancied an afternoon of sitting in the sunshine.

Does anybody else get annoyed when they get done that the margin is so small. I mean, when i get done.. I want to at least get done for a decent speed. Seems like a waste of £60 to me.. . I will now have 6 points on my liscence after being done on the A1 for a whole 68 in a 60.. a couple of years ago.

Just so angry with myself, i mean .. I saw the camera van, thought 'better remember that on the way back' and pegged my speed up the carrigeway incase there was one the other end.

Obviously more pegging needed

It doesn't feel any better getting 2 sets of 3 points for 92mph and 94.69mph on quiet motorways with good visibility.

A couple of asides ...

What is the point in these staying on a licence for 4 years if they only count to totting up for 3 years?

Why do insurance companies care about offences for 5 years but accidents for only 3?

Oh well, they were in 2001 so no longer tot up ..

Sorry about the NIP but thanks for the heads up about the site.

I live about a mile away and often enjoy that mile or so of wide, fairly traffic free (out of rush hour of course!), dual carraigeway.

Will keep an eye out in future.

I've certainly been down there at substantially more than 85 leptons. One to watch out for...

Where does the van park, is it a normal layby, or on a bridge ?

85 in a 70 zone isnt exactly "marginal" is it?
Its always annoying but you could look in a slightly different way.
If you got caught at 85 the chances are you were doing 90+ at some stage so could have been worse.
I got 6 points for 98 and was a little pissed off but then again I had been doing up to 110 so could easily have been banned.
We all know the risks when we do these speeds and a philosophy to which I subscribe is that if you get caught then your observation and awareness is not good enough for the speed you are doing!
Before flaming me I know there are unlucky exceptions

Yeh, if you get 3 points for only just exceeding the limit, find a clear stretch of road, check it out, then hoon it up to get your £60 worth :-)

They were on the southbound carrigeway, with the van in the turning about 1/4 mile from the roundabout at the west end .. end. Then there were coppers by the roundabout pulling people over. I was going the otherway, towards the M3, but they got me.

I've seen them twice there now, both at weekends in good wheather.

That sounds more like ANPR. I wonder it they were doing a joint outing? Or maybe there was more than one van?

They keep sending me bills for speeding tax so I keep speeding, if I've paid the tax I'm going to make use of the service

I feel this is an extremely good point - you never see the scams out in poor conditions, or even when the traffic is busy (therefore slow). It's only ever when the raods are (relatively)clear and the conditions are good ie when its safest to break the limit

Very little risk, in my view.

Only a couple of hundred folks killed per year in the UK on motorways.

You are actually more at risk on the hard shoulder than in the fast lane.

Remember: even though the UK limit is 70 mph, over half the traffic is travelling faster than that, and about 20 per cent are doing over 80 mph.

It's a widely ignored limit.

In my opinion, anyone getting getting three points for less than 90 mph should really have a hard word with the police officer *commanding* the beat officer on the spot.

Haven't the police force got anything better to do ?
This really is a poor allocation of resources.
