Yup, you read the title right, some senior was just on the radio and uttered the classic line "We all know throwing a snowball at someone is assault" We do? Since when? Snowballing is snowballing, get over it.

I didn't realise they now ran a course in "Alienating the public at large" on the fast track courses. Idiots like this really do nothing for the public/police relationship

I suppose it depends on the context. Messing about with your kids or your mates, then fine, you take your own risks. But if a stranger in the street threw a snowball at me, and it hit me in the face, or maybe even in the eye, I would consider it assault. Some pretty nasty injuries have been had from snowballs.

A quick google for snowball injury very quickly pulled up a case of a broken nose and several for corneal damage/scarring.

I can see why it could be an assault. When I was a kid we packed them up really tight so get one of those in your face and it could be painful.

I suppose for it to be an assault there has to be a complainant in the first place.

The correct response to a snowball attack is to walk away muttering 'bloody kids' under your breath

Ist diferent to have snowball fight in back garden - but another to chuck things at strangers... We allow our kittens their fun in the snow - but we do exercise that old fashioned concept.... common sense

Depends on the circumstances, which requires judgement which appears to be somewhat lacking recently.

Yes, it is possible to be severely injured by a snowball, however if thrown without malicious intent (or thought) and such injuries occur it is an accident.

(Quick intake of breath.. a pressure build up and an explosion of ' There is no such thing as an accident' from the H+S brigade)

The person in question should be made to fully understand the consequence of their actions and maybe compensate in some way but assault, I don't think so.

However if the snowballing is malicious and reckless (ie. the person is aware that they may cause injury then they should be punished and assault seems to be an appropriate offence.

Easy fix policing doesn't work as we see on the roads..

Thankyou Wildcat, I've been "attacked" by snowballs whilst driving............it's NOT funny!...........it IS assault!

Just like some guy pointing something at you from a motorway bridge...........

Assault, ASSAULT ?

Shortly after leaving Training School and whilst pounding the Beat in all my finery I was bombarded by said round snow objects.

Got hold of the 17year old thrower (assault?) and reported him for summons for wantonly discharging a missile to the danger of ...... Section 28 Town Police Clauses Act 1897. He was fined 25p (five bob) which was quite a sum of money those days.

For those serving BiB's, as far as I am aware, TPCA is still valid and does contain a list of offences well worth a look at.......

Do what I did when some teenage lads threw stones at me and my dog. Throw them back. Harder.

I remember a couple of kids at my school getting that "gang" mentality once and started snowballing a security guard dropping some cash off. They though it funny and kept going with the snowball attack.

Anyway, poor bloke ended up with only one testicle, a broken hip and was off work for over 6 months (he fell over badly after a particularly vicious volley). The kids were identified and given a slap on the wrist....

Assault? Damn right in that case....

IIRC in Aberdeen at New Year a few (20?) years ago, a large crowd had started a snowball fight, and two van loads of police were called in - to join in, them against the crowd. Fun had by all...

Had some kids throwing snow balls at my car the other day, and after giving them a verbal bollocking, was attacked again. They rode off on bikes, but managed to catch them. The next bollocking was not verbal, and involved one of them chewing on a park bench! I don't think they will be in a hurry to do it again. Chavs don't expect people to fight back, and are shocked when we do.

Yep, I have given them some grief in the past, attack is the best form of defence. Pushed one off his scooter a couple of years back for repeatedly splashing old ladies in a car park.
