I saw one a few months back in Leicester, parked on a grass central reservation of an urban dual carriageway around 9.30pm it was dark.
Yep.
Leicestershire crew did a first operational exercise in our village on a 6pm to 10pm night shift and apparently made around £3,000, mainly from locals, according to the community bobby when he proudly reported how the local police were responding to requests from the local community.

I shine one of those 3,000,000 candle power lamps at the scamera whenever I see one, its great fun but don't know if it stops you getting nabbed though?
Too right, those rally style spotlamp brackets are a B*st*rd! They are always coming loose, tilting back and allowing the lamp to shine at those motorway bridges.....They should redesign them.......

Avon and Somerset scameraship issued a press release a while ago saying they'd "invested" in some sort of night vision lenses/scamera equipment so they could scam 24 hours a day.

Agreed - it was reported in the local rag. Mind you, they did say that the image intesifiers needed street lights or other ambient light to work effectively.

ANPR can be (and is) used in conjunction with Lidar (when aimed between the headlights) – from within the same (double crewed) van. Thankfully, this setup isn’t frequently used.
Mobile Gatsos also work just fine in the dark, but again these are uncommon.
Of course, in both cases the driver can’t be identified, but since when does that matter?
However, plod can pull you and take all your details manually if their opinion has been satisfied via other means.

As has been said , Avon and Somerset scam Ltd issued a press release last January:
"The yellow-painted fixed roadside cameras already operate around the clock to check vehicle speeds.
But until now the mobile teams, who monitor traffic speed at 183 locations with high casualty rates, have only operated during daytime.
Now the cameras in the specially-adapted vans have been upgraded to enable them to operate at night and from next Monday (Jan 10) the mobile teams will spend a proportion of their operational time checking traffic speeds during darkness."
However, I have never seen a scam van at night to date, so I think the statement is more of a bluff than anything to worry about.
