When you are reversing, unless you hit another reversing vehicle, anything that happens is down to you. As the person reversing, the onus is always on you to ensure the path is clear, and remains clear throughout the manoeuvre.
That would be my take on it.
That's kind of where I am with it too but it's pretty much impossible to avoid someone flinging their door into your car no matter how much care you take That would be my take on it.

That video doesn’t show her opening her door onto your car.
The original contains sounds including a thud, me telling the lady she's opened the door into the car and her saying I've reversed into her door. You know, the one that isn't there. A1VDY said:

I work in an industry that deals with large lorries. We get many claims where the lorry is parked, driver is about to reverse, having got out of the cab to ensure it's clear, when a car pulls up right behind him, despite the sign that says "if you can't see my mirrors, I can't see you".
The lorry driver has no chance. But it's 100% of the time the lorry driver's fault.
Of course it should be the lorry driver's fault. If the lorry owner is incapable of fitting sufficient mirrors/cameras to give a view all around, then the driver must maintain an awareness of what is entering their blind spots. The lorry driver has no chance. But it's 100% of the time the lorry driver's fault.
Ignorance at its finest..
Do lorries have reversing sensors and cameras? I can see nothing out of the back of my car, but camera and sensors help. I don’t ever reverse into cars, people, walls etc. Yes trucks are bigger but technology is there to help.

As for being able to see part of the car, can I ask what your experience is in this area? You might be able to see some of a stretch limo, but nothing of an average family car. Next time you're out, just have a look at how far the mirrors come out, the length of the trailer, and draw an imaginary line in your head from the mirror to the rear corner of the trailer. Continue that line in your head and you might get an idea of the area that is hidden.

Artics pull a variety or trailers, often not even belonging to the owner of the tractor unit. No guarantee that they will have any kind of sensors, or that they will be working. I'd say it was quite rare.

My experience is common sense, if my eyes can see the mirror then the driver can see my eyes, but my eyes are not on the end of the bonnet, so the bonnet comes into sightline of the mirrors before my eyes do. QED the signs are factually incorrect. As for being able to see part of the car, can I ask what your experience is in this area? I do get that its hard to see from a truck, my approach to the signs is that of a pedant, but I do understand there purpose.
Trailers manage to have brake lines and lights that plug into the tractor unit, I cant see why cameras and sensors couldn't do the same, its only an electrical connection, one weather proof multiplug would sort it.
This thread is turning into a lovely blend of comedy and ignorance, carry on PH at its best.
Ps OP I’m glad you’re sorted the damage so it’s not so bad and I’m sure you’re not at fault and the other driver is an ignorant tt, but since my opinion is neither funny or worthy of being a troll I’ll leave now

Most threads on PH will attract one or two bellends, but my god this one has got them in droves!
Everything from tts saying OP should've not only realised someone was in the car but also that she was about to fling her door open to throbbers saying drivers of artics have as good visibility of their surroundings as drivers of Micras.
They do indeed walk among us...

I think he's part right. You can see in the vid that someone is in the car... . I think I might have honked (but I'd be going in front first), not so easy to do when reversing though. Swings and roundabouts.
It's going to get pretty honky out there if we're all expected to cover all the "might do this..." actions of every other motorist. But yes, you're right. Thing is people don't usually dawdle when getting out of cars, it's just your poor luck you found one!
With the benefit of hindsight is this thread not justification for those of us who park at the furthest point of a supermarket carpark from the doors and if possible in a space with empty spaces each side or an end space. The other risk reducer is never park in a space where you can see the car on either side has any occupants. Both of which would have prevened this accident from happening.
For what it's worth I think the door opener is at fault but being right isn't much consolation when your car gets dented.

Exactly. At last the obvious point is made. For what it's worth I think the door opener is at fault but being right isn't much consolation when your car gets dented.
