I have contributed in all of my posts, and have been questioned in just about all of my posts, which have been answered. If this isn't contributing then what is?

No you haven't. How exactly have you helped Broccers?
As I said before, you (we) should not have hijacked this thread.

PS, you didn't answer my (second to) last post

Ok, so my advice hasn't been what Broccoli wanted to hear, but I have given him good advice regarding the fact that the lady needs some education if she is uncomfortable at driving her new car properly (check one of my previous posts).

I guess we shouldn't have hijacked this thread and I apologise to everyone for that. However, this is a forum and I am allowed to express my views on things on here!

Imagine you are travelling down a motorway at 100mph, you see a slight corner up ahead, you stick to your speed then as you come round the corner you see all of the lanes full with a car overtaking a lorry, that is overtaking another lorry and so on. The car in the outside lane is doing about 65mph. Just imagine if you come round a corner and have this infront of you at 100mph!!

Exactly the same as coming around a corner at 35mph and finding a stationary obstruction in the road.

Frightening.

FR is being silly. A slight corner on a motorway would give you hundreds of yards warning. Can anyone think of any motorway where there is less than a quarter mile line of sight ahead?

In any case you would probably have seen them from some distance back, before they temporarily disappeared out of sight round the bend, would you not?

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Just imagine it at 140 mph - in the rain and at night.
So what ?

In any event, a swift press of the brakes will suffice.
Losing 35 mph is about one or two seconds work.

In other words, very easy for any driver watching what they are doing - and at 100 mph most Brit drivers *will* be careful.

Earlier today I covered a 20-30 mile stretch of dual carriageway (parts of which are of motorway standard) at 100-105 mph with one or two brief spells at 110, and if FR had been with me I doubt if he would have had any cause for concern.

I don't wish to be rude FR, but would you mind giving us some idea of your age and driving experience. After all, if some of us here are going to be criticised for our attitude and behaviour when driving, I think we are entitled to know something about the qualifications of our critics.

Best wishes all,

Broccoli, the Bora hasn't been used on a track day because I didn't buy it for that purpose. The amount of mileage I do a year requires something economical like my Bora. I would love to hoon around in an Evo or an Impreza but at the moment I can't do it due to budget issues. However as soon as the money is there i'm off to buy a second 'toy' car!

Er, no. You need to drop 35mph.
As has been pointed out, 2 lorries and a car are going to be fairly easy to see at a long distance. There are no blind bends on motorways.

Hole, digging, stop.......

Are you actually German if you don't mind me asking??

With regards to 'the' forum I don't know why they stopped your feline friends from posting. I found it amusing but, oh well, you know what its like on 'the' forum. I have just been moaning about cyclists jumping lights etc as it gives good cyclists like me a bad name, only to be shot down.

How about a Seat Leon Cupra R, any good??

Doh.

To get from 100 mph to a required 65 mph takes a 35 mph loss. Easy.

To get to 65 mph from 140 mph takes 75 mph loss. Bit more difficult. Would take a little longer.

And before you side track into brakes, if you've got a car that can do 140 mph, you've got a car with brakes to cope with that kind of work.

Errr, doh to you.

You gave an example in your post of travelling at 140mph, thats what I was working off.

Ok then, how about summits and brows of hills? There are lots of them on certain motorways in the country.

You own a spade????? I thought a spade is a tool that is too slow at making holes for you.

I thought you used dynamite because its quicker and more reckless at making said hole.

Right, science time.

Car A doing 65mph
Car B (ME) doing 100mph. (Not really officer!)

Car A is moving at 95 feet per second.
Car B is moving at 146 Feet per second.

Car B is closing on car A at 51 Feet per second.

Assuming braking down to 95Ft/sec takes 3 seconds (this is almost definitly an over-estimate), then Car B has closed on Car A by 150 feet. In reality far less as as soon as the car brakes the closing speed is less.

If you can show me one place on the motorway network where visibility is less than 50 yards then you have a point.

...and I've lived far too long to have been reckless.

You can put up as much science theory as you like but if you don't notice something up ahead until you are looming on it, you are still worse off than if you were doing 70mph.

The above theory is ok but you haven't included one useful fact, how close the following car was to the vehicles in front when the hazard was noticed and braking began.

Where is your bend, brow of hill, etc which would give less than 50 yards visibility? I think that on a motorway anything less than a couple of hundred yards would be extremely rare.
As for not spotting 2 lorries and a car until within 50 yards, you are joking?

You really are struggling now.

Your scenario can only exist in your own imagination.

60mph would be safer than 70, 50 safer than 60. What is your point?

Barton Bridge on the M60 has about 50 yards visibility close to the top.

M60 clockwise from Hyde to Stockport has a very tight bend, probably about 100-150 yards visibility (and a 50mph limit).

Sections of the M6 through Stoke are very twisty and not suitable for 100mph+

Not all motorways are capable of more than 70mph.
