Police BMW engine issues

Surely any Police N57 engine cars are going to be at the end of their life anyway, they'd be nearly 3 years old now, so, with the newer cars having the B57 engine it can't be this, unless these are B57 engines and have inherited the same issue?
You'd be surprised. Lots of 66 plates still knocking about near me.Well, there were until they were taken off the road.

RPU often run their cars a lot longer than 3 years hence they’ll be lots of N57s left. Afraid I don’t know if the B57 is reliable or not. I do know that I wouldn’t buy a BMW diesel after the M57. In an interesting (sort of) twist to this, i was surprised to a Highways Officer in a fully marked up 21-plate X5 HETO-mobile yesterday, down here in Hants where the police have been long-time X5 fans but have recently moved onto VW hardware.
I've not seen a HETO in a BMW of any sort before, and it seems a particularly odd time to start using them now; BMW trying other avenues maybe? Does the HETO role not require the same all-day running that seems to have caused the RPU issues?

Not in the same way, no. They might be run steadily, or at tick over for some time, but they're not redlined in the same way as police X5s.
Depending on where you are in the country, it's not unheard of for traffic police and others to do 30-miles blue light runs. Fuel economy down into single figures or low teens even in a diesel!

Yeah they've bought a load of X5 and XC90 PHEVs to be more 'green', means it takes a bit longer to see whether it's police or not in the case of the Volvo.I've not seen a HETO in a BMW of any sort before, and it seems a particularly odd time to start using them now; BMW trying other avenues maybe? Probably got a good deal on all the plod motors being returned. I've not seen a HETO in a BMW of any sort before, and it seems a particularly odd time to start using them now; BMW trying other avenues maybe?

The BMW’s being grounded nationwide was principally due to the tragic case of the officer in a Cumbria. I think BMW were treating that as a bit of an isolated incident until one of our 330’s spontaneously caught fire on the A627M and burnt to a crisp within minutes…
That’s M66 J2 if I’m not mistaken ? There’s been more than one combust
There was 530d that lit itself up at 130mph on the M60 at Chadderton and a couple of X5’s on the network as well

I hate to tempt fate, but the 2017 F15 X5 40d I've had since new, has been the most reliable car I've ever owned.
Yea but, have you done 250k in it flat out and thoroughly abused it ? Maybe left it idling for 6 hours then jumped in it and reversed it at high speed for nearly a mile ?
Then stood awhile, then booted it to over a 100mph ?
Maybe not
Ps my 2015 BMW X3 has been completely faultless from new

We’ve got some 2015 530Ds, and even some 10/11 plates which are only really used for spares and TPAC training.
The 2015 ones are way more chuckable and fun than the newer XDrives!
Yup 10 years or more for beat/CID cars The 2015 ones are way more chuckable and fun than the newer XDrives!
RPU 7/8 years usually ending up as spares or training cars at the end
M/Way 4 years and then disposed or used as training/spares
Assuming they didn’t die a glorious death in the service of the nation before then
I remember the Vectra’s being so worthless a load of them got cannibalised for spares then the remains sold off for scrap

It would be quite comical to see how new the 2015 cars are, but of a Triggers broom scenario with whole sides being replaced after collisions, numerous warranty engine rebuilds etc etc…
We had a 56 plate 330d touring that didn't have a single original panel on it, one of those cars that just kept on going and going. Shame they're not like that anymore.Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
