3 points and 100 fine for tyre on 1.5.7
Discussion
I think some of you may have read it wrong. I was apparently pulled over for speeding, although they were creeping up the road at about 10mph and I'm not really sure why they think I'd speed when they were infront of me! I should be taking the tyre to a garage this week to be looked at, I will also be looking to see if they still have footage of pulling me over. Looking back maybe I should not have turned around in an alleyway but really I just wanted to prove a point! They tyre read 1.2 on the outside, 1.57 in the middle and 1.8 on the inside... My tracking has been out so I am not sure if that had something to do with it. As for attitude, if a police officer pulls you over and comes to the window and immediately starts mouthing off about showing off etc and then gives me 3 points and a £100 fine straight away im obviously not going to be happy! I can assure you I have been pulled over before and Iv done the attitude test and it's worked, but I'm not going to be nice to an officer if he isn't nice to me..

Your tyre was illegal.Pay the fine and take the points.

In your OP you said you caught up to the Police quickly, perhaps that gave them the idea that you were speeding? You then said you darted down a side street to see if they would follow you, surprise surprise they did.
All the time you were on illegal tyres.
You then gave it attitude.
And you wonder why the Police came down hard on you.

You don't have to be doing anything wrong to be pulled over. You can be pulled over by any police officer in order to check your documents.
Under review by the Home office at the moment together with other stop/search powers. ' She has also commissioned HMIC to review all other police powers similar to stop and search – including Section 163 of the Road Traffic Act - with a view to eliminating any unfair or inappropriate use.'
Be interesting to see what comes out of the review

a) I was apparently pulled over for speeding, although they were creeping up the road at about 10mph and I'm not really sure why they think I'd speed when they were infront of me! - it doesn't matter why they pulled you over, I would consider if there are other reasons which you have not considered though
b) I will also be looking to see if they still have footage of pulling me over. - I wouldn't bother, see above
c) Looking back maybe I should not have turned around in an alleyway but really I just wanted to prove a point! - I'm genuinely interested to know what point you were trying to make?
d)They tyre read 1.2 on the outside, 1.57 in the middle and 1.8 on the inside... - that's illegal and you seriously shouldn't bother trying to bring this before a judge unless advised to do so by a solicitor who knows what they're talking about
e)My tracking has been out so I am not sure if that had something to do with it. - less than 0.4mm difference, probably not much to do with the tracking unless your tyre's inner is smooth or showing cord (something that could possibly lead to a high speed blow-out so it is important not to be blase' about it)
f)As for attitude, if a police officer pulls you over and comes to the window and immediately starts mouthing off about showing off etc and then gives me 3 points and a £100 fine straight away im obviously not going to be happy! Do you get pulled over often?

The only thing that matters here is the condition of the tyre. If at any point in the centre three quarters of the breadth of the tyre the tread is under 1.6mm then the tyre is illegal. From the op's description, the tyre is illegal....end of. Best to change tyres at 2mm or above for safety and to avoid problems with the police.
I don't have the time or the inclination to read this whole thread. VTB - if you are unhappy with the 3 points and £100 fine offered by the fixed penalty notice then decline it and ask for it to be dealt with by the beak. You will most likely fail unless you can prove plod to be incorrect at which point it will cost you more than £100 & potentially more than 3 points.
Chalk it up to experience and make a note to change your tyres in future before they are on the limit. It would also appear you may have failed the attitude test too with plod, this could have influenced the outcome of your predicament rending this thread unnecessary.

Make it impossible to do any kind of proactive policing work, crime falls as a result, close yet more stations so crime falls even more, cut numbers based on above and back home for high fives and medals for all the money that's been saved. Whilst all along destroying any sort of service that was once offered. Then offer contracts to mates such as G4S, brilliant.

However if the measurement is marginal, there could be a debate about it if the OP so desired.
I suspect it will be a debate with a magistrate with expensive consequences.I think everybody here realises that 1.57mm is only very slightly less than 1.6mm but it's not like the officer measured the tyre with a 20 pence piece or his fingernail, they used an evidentiary device. The OP's attitude to vehicle maintenance fell short of what is expected of the holder of a driver's licence and if he wishes to challenge the clear evidence against him, he is likely to be humiliated in court.
I'm sure the OP knows how to put pictures up on the forum. I suspect he won't because the tyre is clearly in a sorry and illegal state.

Well with a tyre its either legal or it isn't......
Yes to a point. I had BMW try and bend me over on an MOT for 4 new tyres. After a bit of verbal with the service manager we went in the workshop and re-measured all 4 tyres and could not find a single point under 2mm.......... still waiting for an official response from them as to what happened.shep1001 said:
